The small community of Steelville is an ideal destination for people whose families include a canine member who appreciates the outdoors. The town sits close to two major state parks, and folks escaping the big city frequent the area for camping, hiking, and boating.
Permanent residents have most of the necessary conveniences not too far away. The one veterinary clinic in the community's boundaries serves most routine veterinary needs. More specialized care is just a short drive away in the larger cities like Rolla and Sullivan.
Metropolitan Saint Louis is less than a two-hour drive away. The municipality maintains several public parks which have green spaces for some on-leash exercise. Hoppe Spring Park includes picnic sites, a playground, and places to get a good breather outdoors.
More extensive hikes can be undertaken at Onondaga Cave State Park. This state park is fifteen miles north, in Leasburg. Onondaga is the site of some spectacular caves. Visitors may take a tour of the cave for a fee. Five marked trails offer the op-paw-tunity for some healthy exercise. Dogs must stay on no less than a ten-foot-long leash while on the trails. The trails range in length from .5 miles to 3 miles in length. Most of the trails are dirt trails of moderate difficulty and wind through some steep elevation through hardwood forest. Onondaga also has a campground. Furry family members may camp with their family as long as they remain on-leash.
Steelville is just a bone's throw away from dog-friendly fun!
