In Shelby County, Tennessee, east of Memphis is the community of Cordova, which was settled in 1835 as a farming village. They were known for their fresh-cut flowers, and their nickname was the town of fellowship, farms, and flowers. Today it is the fastest growing community in Shelby County, and there are approximately 17,550 dogs in Cordova so there are some great dog-friendly parks in town.
Shelby Farms Park is huge – even bigger than New York Central Park! There is so much to do you will have to visit the park daily for a year to be able to do everything they offer. The main attraction here for dog-lovers is the Outback, which is the only 100-acre dog park in the United States! With trails, lakes, fountains, and even a dog wash station to clean Fido before getting back in the car. Memphis Veterinary Specialists nearby provides emergency veterinary service if needed while in the park too.
Overton Bark Dog Park in Rainbow Park is a 1.3-acre park with fountains, benches, and play equipment. There are separate areas for big and small dogs, and the ground is mulch, so there is no dirt or mud to worry about. The owners hold special events every month and give out treats for everyone. The park itself has a lake, trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds.
If you and your pooch are wandering around Cordova Creek and get a hankering for some food, then be sure to stop by Humdinger’s. They offer an alternative to fast food and have fresh made meals ready daily. Their menu ranges from seafood to chicken, and they have a lot of gluten-free options as well. They even have the option of sitting at the counter and watching your food be made right in front of you! Their outdoor patio is 100% dog friendly, but if you and Fido just want to stop in fast, they also offer a pick-up option where you can walk in, grab your food, and go!
