Introduction
Afghanistan, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country within South Asia and Central Asia. Much of its territory is covered by the Hindu Kush mountain range, where winters tend to be very cold. The northern part of the country is mainly fertile plains and summers are usually very hot. People have inhabited Afghanistan as far back as the Middle Paleolithic Era. The country’s population is about 35 million and includes ethnic Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks. When searching for a name for your new canine buddy, you will find that Afghanistan has plenty to offer when it comes to inspiration.
Afghanistan Dog Names in Pop Culture
A dog by the name of Rocky joined his partner of two years, Specialist Andrew Brown, in Afghanistan where, unfortunately, they were injured by shrapnel from an improvised explosive devise (IED). The injured military dog and his handler were awarded Purple hearts and a picture of them and awards went viral. After the explosion the pair were flown together to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where they received their Purple Hearts. Brown, who is a husband and father, gives the credit to Rocky, noting that Rocky does his thing and Brown translates his response. Brown and Rocky were separated for treatment, with Brown in D.C. and Rocky in Germany. While both were facing additional surgeries, Brown hoped to be reunited with his partner soon.
Two Belgian Shepherds who worked for the army and were on duty in Afghanistan before retiring, faced being put down because they were deemed too aggressive to be rehomed. Dog handlers and ex-soldiers were determined to give the dogs, named Kevin and Dazz, the chance to find new homes. Both dogs had worked sniffing IED’s while on duty prior to their retirement. A petition to stop the dogs being put down was launched by Andy McNab, a former SAS officer. The petition got over 367,000 signatures over a few days. Defence Minister Gavin Williamson expressed that he would make sure that the dogs had a “golden future” and that they were speaking with charities and programs to see if the dogs could be rehoused with a handler in a home environment.
A breed of dog that originated in or around what is now Afghanistan is the Afghan Hound. This is an old breed that predates written history by several thousand years. For many centuries, the dogs were rugged, fast hunting companions as well as status symbols of royals, tribal chieftains and aristocrats in the mountain kingdoms of Asia. The dogs were not seen in the west until the late 1800’s, when English officers returning from the far corners of the British Empire brought the breed to Europe. Artist Pablo Picasso had an Afghan Hound, and a giant statue he created is present in Daley Plaza in Chicago, honoring his pooch, named Kabul. A 1962 painting titled “Femme au chien” boasts an Afghan Hound; in 2012 the painting sold for over 10 million dollars.
Afghanistan Dog Name Considerations
It can be hard to know where to start when looking for a name for your new pup. Just as your dog is special, you want their name to be special as well. If you are struggling to choose a name for your pooch, one way to look for inspiration is to turn to a particular place that you feel strongly about, whether you have lived there, visited or plan to visit one day. It is likely that you will find all sorts of interesting name ideas from the place that you choose with a little bit of exploration.
Once you have a place in mind, you can take a closer look at it. Take out a map or start searching the internet for ideas within the place; this can include landmarks, neighborhoods, food items, and well-known people from there, among other things. If a possible name appeals to you, write it down. After a thorough search you can review the name possibilities that you like and choose the one you feel is the best fit. Afghanistan is one such place to search; with a long history and variety of landscapes, inspiration can be plentiful.
