Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'lo' in Pop Culture
You have probably read many stories about loyal dogs who have stuck by their owners through thick and thin, but this dog takes loyalty over the top. Canelo, which means cinnamon in Spanish, was just an average, medium-sized brownish-red dog who lived with a man in Cadiz, Spain in the 1980s. The man was a bit of a loner and did not have many friends, but he always had Canelo by his side. They would walk together through the city every day, and everyone recognized them.
However, Canelo’s owner was sick with kidney disease and had to go to the Puerta del Mar Hospital once a week so that he could get dialysis treatments. Canelo always accompanied his owner to the hospital, but he could not go inside because of hospital policy. So, every week, Canelo would lay by the door and wait for his human companion to come and walk him home. They followed this routine for several years, and everyone at the hospital knew the man and his faithful fur baby, Canelo.
One day in 1990, there was a complication while the man was getting his dialysis treatment from which they were not able to save him, and he died there in the hospital. However, Canelo still waited there at the door for his human companion. No amount of coaxing by the people at the hospital could get Canelo away from that door. Every single day he was there, whether it was raining, snowing, hot, or cold, Canelo would not leave without his master.
The locals and hospital workers noticed that he never left and realized that he must be hungry and thirsty, so they started bringing him water and food. In fact, they even managed to save him when the local animal services wanted to take him and put him to sleep. They got a local organization called the Association for the Defense and Study of Nature to adopt and vaccinate him to stop him from being considered an undocumented stray.
Because Canelo was such a friendly dog that never bothered anyone, those who knew of him did not mind him being there. In fact, many of the employees and patients looked forward to seeing him when they came to the hospital. He stayed close to that door until the day he passed away on December 9, 2002, when he was hit by a car. His story was well-known, and the City of Cadiz put up a plaque in his honor and named an alley by the hospital door after him so he would always be remembered for his loyalty.
