Introduction
Singapore Dog Names in Pop Culture
Sirius was one of Singapore’s first police dogs to become a cadaver detecting dog. The gorgeous German Shepherd was one of the first canines to train for picking up the scent of human remains, which has been vital in helping find victims of not only foul play but disasters like the Little India Riot, Nicoll Highway Collapse, and the Southeast Asia floods to name a few.
While this type of job may not seem like it is a job to be proud of, finding victims of crimes, minute amounts of blood or even blood spots that have been cleaned up can help catch a killer who may have otherwise gotten away with it. Sirius was also able to find victims who were lost in the woods, injured children, and the remains of long-forgotten victims who deserve to be found and buried properly so their families and friends can have closure.
Being the first dog to be trained as a police cadaver dog, Sirius soon became quite popular with the police force as well as the community. He was more than just a police dog according to his handlers. In fact, Sirius was a true friend to all at the Sunny Heights Police Department. He retired from the police force and was adopted by Tan Derrick, who founded the Voices for Animals campaign. Voices for Animals has a wide range of interests such as spaying and neutering, adoption, housing, and animal protection.
In 2016, Sirius passed away peacefully at the age of 16 and was surrounded by friends and family members. According to Derrick, Sirius had a great life doing what he loved working for the police department and then visiting parks, beaches, and dog parks after he retired. Some of his canine coworkers at Sunny Heights are still working for the police station and are trying to live up to the legacy of Sirius.
Other well-known dogs in Singapore include Murphy and Happy, who were previously K9 sniffer dogs for the police. They were adopted by Madam Karen Teng, who had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from a hit and run accident she was a victim of. The two dogs help Teng deal with the panic attacks and anxiety she has had to deal with since the accident. Another dog, Wang Wang, a Poodle, warned her owners of a fire in the house so they could get out without being harmed. There are also a few organizations in Singapore that devote themselves to helping dogs such as Healing Paws, Save our Street Dogs (SOSD), and Therapy Dogs Singapore (TDS). All of these dogs and their humans who are so dedicated to helping people and canines should be known as heroes.
Singapore Dog Name Considerations
If you are considering Singapore dog names, you may be a native of the country, someone who loves to visit the country, or maybe you just really like the names they choose. The country of Singapore is known for many things such as being smart and clean, which your dog is. Right? Well, most dogs are not really all that clean, but your pup is definitely smart. The names that Singaporeans choose for their children, as well as their pets, are amazing with interesting meanings that range from brave to wise. Those two things definitely describe your dog. There are other names in Singapore that can be silly or sweet such as flower or sunny.
When you look at your dog, do you think, "wow, he looks like a king?" Or maybe you say, “my dog looks like a flower.” Then again, it is sometimes important to get to know your pooch for a while before you give them a name. For example, what if you give your dog a name that means brave, but your dog runs and hides when they hear the slightest sound? That would probably constitute a name change. Then again, that is up to you since many people like to name their dogs the opposite of what they are like naming a Great Dane Tiny or a hairless dog Furball. It is ultimately up to you to name your dog whatever name you like because it is you who will be saying it day after day for the next dozen years or so.
