Quiet Dog Names

Many believe that the dog-like Egyptian God named, "Anubis" is depicted as the quiet Basenji canine but other researchers have been known to argue that the head is that of a jackal dog. Jackals were known to frequent cemeteries across ancient Egypt which is why many researchers associate the canine with Anubis. However, other Egyptologists argue that the Basenji dog was the beloved pet and companion of the Pharaohs as drawings and etchings across Egypt clearly show, so the Basenji is the head of Anubis. 

The godlike Anubis figure has the head of a dog and the body of a man.  Anubis was not only the God of the dead but also of the act of embalming the dead for their journey in the next life. During the mummification process, the embalmers would wear a headdress and mask of Anubis in a show of respect and in order to further protect the dead on their afterlife journey. 

Anubis is known to possess superhuman strength and stamina. He protects the gates of the underworld. The Egyptian god is unable to harm anyone who owns the ankh symbol of life. One of his primary functions was to act as the guardian of the scales. His job was to weigh the heart of men in the afterlife. The weight of the man's heart was his worth in the afterlife. Anubis would weigh the man's heart and decide his ultimate fate. 

The root of the name "Anubis" is "royal child". He is always depicted in the color black which is a shade connected to rebirth. The wife of Anubis is Anput, and he also has a daughter who is considered the serpent goddess Kebechet. Another god, Upuat, is often associated with Anubis. Just like Anubis, Upuat also has the head of a canine. Other duties performed by Anubis included being the guardian of orphans and a guide for the dead. He was entrusted with making sure the soul reached the afterlife.
