Introduction
Albania, officially the Republic of Albania, is a country located in Southeast Europe that is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south and southeast. The country offers a diverse landscape, to include snow-capped mountains and hot, sunny coasts. Albania has an upper-middle income economy and provides universal healthcare and free primary and secondary education to its citizens.
Albania has a lot to offer, including a myriad of possibilities for a name for your pup. Take a closer look and you may find a name that is just right for your canine pal.
Albanian Dog Names In Pop Culture
In December of 2017, Anita Hendrieka was scrolling through Facebook out of boredom when she came across a post that piqued her interest. A woman named Kornelia had posted a photo and information about a street dog living in Tirana. Hendrieka was immediately drawn to the picture of the dog, called Oreo, because her family has had Border Collies from the time she was born. From New Zealand, her father was a sheep farmer and he always relied on sheep dogs to help on the farm. Hendrieka admitted that both she and her father had a slight obsession with Border Collies who are known to be smart and loyal dogs.
The description that came with Oreo’s photo was that he was a sweet, energetic dog who was just looking for some love. Apparently Kornelia and her husband run a dog walking and coaching business in Tirana and stated that Oreo used to wait for them at the same corner each day and walk along with them. The pup was simply seeking the attention and love that any dog should enjoy. Hendrieka’s heart melted. After all, street dogs in Albania are not always treated with love.
Hendrieka immediately sent a message to Kornelia to seek more details about Oreo. She also checked in with a friend who lives full time in Albania. Her friend expressed that he would be happy to pick up Oreo and spend three months with him until Hendrieka returned to Albania. She felt that she could not turn her back on Oreo; the idea of him being on the street made her very sad and she could not stop thinking about the black and white pup.
Her friend wound up picking up Oreo on Christmas day. In March, Hendrieka arrived in Albania and had a hard time believing he had been a street dog. He did well on the lead and was in great condition. As her friend lived in Berat and she lived in Saranda, Hendrieka and Orea were quickly faced with a road trip. The journey was rough for Oreo, who turned out to be very car sick. Over the six hour journey they had the opportunity to bond, with Oreo spending much of his time in Hendrieka’s lap.
Oreo is now home in Saranda where he and Hendrieka live together. Hendrieka reports that Oreo is totally comfortable in his home and surroundings. The pup loves children and is confused by waves. Since a lot of Albanians are afraid of dogs (they have been brought up not to trust dogs), when Oreo is out for a walk he is often given a large amount of space by people trying to avoid him. Fortunately, he has his own best buddy to give him all of the attention he could desire!
