Introduction
Andorra, a microstate on the Iberian Peninsula in the eastern Pyrenees Mountains, is officially known as the Principality of Andorra. Also called the Principality of the Valleys of Andorra, it is bordered by France (north) and Spain (south). Andorra is a diarchy, as it is headed by two Co-Princes; the Catholic Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the President of the Republic of France. The sixth-smallest nation in Europe, its capital is the highest on the continent at 3356 feet above sea level. The majority of Andorra’s geography is rugged mountains and the climate is alpine and continental. The country is known for the many ski resorts that dot the mountainsides.
Andorra may be small, but it has plenty of unique name possibilities to offer, one of which may be the perfect fit for your canine pal.
Andorra Dog Names In Pop Culture
A well-known person from Andorra is Alex Antor, an alpine skier who skied for Andorra in the 2006 Olympics. It turns out that there are a number of well-known dogs named Alex. Take the military dog Alex who was serving with his handler, Alec Alcoser, in Afghanistan. A bomb-sniffing dog, Alex was great pals with Alec; they slept in the same bed and played together when Alcoser had an off day. Anytime they had a mission, they would start it with a treat for Alex and some ice cream for Alec. About six months into his deployment, Alec was injured in a blast from a suicide bomber on the street near Bagram Airfield, which is the largest American base in Afghanistan. Three Czech soldiers were killed in the blast, and Alcoser and two Afghan soldiers were injured. Also injured was Alex.
After the blast, there was a firefight. Despite this, Alex stayed by the side of his handler, who had suffered broken bones in his arms and legs and also experienced a mild traumatic brain injury. Alex lost a leg in the blast. Both Alec and Alex returned to the U.S. and were reunited briefly in D.C. when both received Purple Hearts. It looks like the pup and his handler will be reunited for good; Alex has retired and once Alec completes his rehabilitation he is hoping to bring his canine partner home to live with his wife and six-month old son.
Another canine Alex who received media attention is a Weimaraner who had been eating twigs and rocks while living on the streets in New Orleans. The pup was taken to Vermillion Parish’s Rabies Animal Control weighing a mere 43 pounds. He was significantly emaciated; so much so that when the assistant director of the Southern Animal Foundation saw his photo, he was amazed he was still alive. She knew he would not make it if he stayed in the shelter, so she pulled him out for care. While being evaluated, X-Rays showed that Alex had eaten rocks and twigs to fill himself up.
Initially, his prognosis was unclear. As a result of his severe starvation, when his stomach received the nutrition he was given, it flipped. This required immediate surgery to remove the items in his stomach. Fortunately, Alex pulled through. Once he had recovered, he went to the foster home of Diane Lundeen, who already had two Weimaraners. She quickly fell in love with Alex; he fell in love right back and within a week in her home he had gained ten pounds. Four months later, it was clear that she could not part with the pup, who she reported now has good color in his gums and his eyes are bright. His foster home turned into his forever home.
Andorra Dog Name Considerations
Are you ready to growl in frustration because you can’t settle on the right name for your pup? If so, you are not alone. While some folks have no trouble settling on just the right name for their new friend, others find it to be a significant challenge to choose a moniker for their pup. Wanting the “right” name makes sense; after all, you will be calling the name for years to come.
If you are looking for something unique that has some meaning for you, one way to come up with ideas is to explore a place that is of interest to you. Perhaps it is a place that you have lived or traveled to, or dream of visiting one day. Take Andorra; while the European country is small, being nestled in the mountains, it offers beautiful scenery. A closer look will likely bring to mind a number of name ideas based on its villages, popular culinary dishes and well-known people. Consider naming your dog Moreno, after Lake Moreno, one of seventy lakes in the country. Are you a lover of food? Call your pup Della, in reference to the name Escuedella, the national dish of Andorra.
A virtual tour of Andorra is bound to bring up some unique name ideas. Explore and then choose one that best fits your pup. With a name from the country, each time you call for your pup you will be reminded of this unique place.
