Kala and Kiera

A much-shared Facebook post helped two Atlanta-area dogs find a home. A picture of the two pups, named Kala (an 11-month-old hound mix) and Kiera (a 15-month-old Boxer mix), was posted by the rescue group Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. The photo showed the dogs hugging and included a caption stating “If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave”.

A few hours after the post went online, a volunteer offered to foster the pair, which got them off “death row”. The post, which received thousands of likes and shares, led to their story being picked up by People magazine. Kala and Kiera not only found a home, but found one where they could be together. A woman named Wendy, who is from Atlanta, had recently said goodbye to her two elderly dogs. Upon reading about the dogs in People magazine and realizing that there were still available, she asked her housemate and best friend Pam to adopt the dogs with her. Wendy expressed that adopting the two pups made a big difference as she mourned the loss of her two old friends. Kala and Keira now each have their own person and a home to share.

Pig is another well-known dog from Atlanta. Found as a puppy in the woods near Atlanta, Pig had been abandoned by her mother, who was feral. She had a number of significant birth defects that impacted her health, so much so that a veterinarian that examined her recommended that she be euthanized.

Fortunately, a woman named Kim Dillenbeck discovered her and adopted her. Her birth defects, which include an incomplete spine, fused and twisted vertebrae and joints and hips rotated in the wrong positions give Pig a unique appearance. Pig is missing a few of her ribs and her weight is only half that of her siblings. While life is more challenging for Pig, she is a happy dog who is living life to the fullest. Fortunately, she has Kim by her side, who is providing her love and attention, as well as doing all that she can to make life work for Pig.
