Introduction
Officially called the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan is a country located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. The country is bound by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. While the majority of Azerbaijan’s citizens are of Muslim background, most do not actively practice any religion. The country has a high level of human development, comparable to most Eastern European countries, as well as a high rate of economic development and literacy. Azerbaijan has a variety of landscapes, to include mountain ridges, crests and plateaus.
Spend some time exploring Azerbaijan and you will come across a number of unique name opportunities, one of which may be just right for your pup.
Azerbaijan Dog Names in Pop Culture
A well-known singer in Azerbaijan is Nigar Jamal, who goes by the name “Nikki”. Nikki is also the name of a Pit Bull who was a victim of animal cruelty whose life got turned around.
Pit Bulls often have bad reputations; in fact, some areas have breed-specific legislation that bans the breed, leading to a likely death for the pups. The stereotypes, however, are just that; Pit Bulls can be as loving, gentle and obedient as any other breed. Nikki was just a puppy when she was found in Florida in 2011. She had been grievously mistreated which included damage to her ears and was in need of help.
Kelly Chickos heard about the injured puppy and met her at a luncheon for the SPCA in Tampa Bay, where she immediately fell for the pooch. Her family has frequently rescued senior Greyhounds, but the Pit Bull puppy found a way into her heart. She asked anyone she could about adopting her. She admits to being a pest and said that she even made a care package for Nikki, with toys, treats and hand-knit ear covers. It was the care package that convinced the shelter that Kelly was the right person to offer Nikki a forever home. According to Kelly, Nikki gets along well with her brothers and sisters who are mostly Greyhounds and that her personality brings a new energy to the group.
While Nikki did not have hearing problems, rain was problematic because she did not have flaps to protect her ears, meaning that drops would enter her ear canal. She also required sunscreen in the area to avoid burns. Now an adult dog, Nikki is an ambassador for the Pit Bull breed. Nikki has had professional photos done, which Kelly hopes will help to bring awareness to animal cruelty. Her story is part of the Pit Bull Picture Project, which, through photos and stories, seeks to show how Pit Bulls are silly and cute, in an effort to dispel the myths about them. The project also is an effort to encourage people to adopt a dog of the breed.
