Though she carries a delicate blue-violet flower name, Iris is a strong and talented FBI dog with a unique mission. Most police dogs work to sniff out particular drugs or bombs and to chase and track down criminals on the run. But Iris has been trained in a different department. This three-year-old black Labrador Retriever is one of several dogs in the world that can locate the tiniest of computer chips. She’s an integral part of investigations centering on cybercrime in which children and terrorism are often factors. “Good girl” doesn’t even begin to express how amazing and helpful this dog is!

When it comes to crime scenes, sometimes law enforcement could actually spend lengthy amounts of time searching for the most minute of thumbnail technological devices. These chips could be hidden deep within furniture, jewelry, or even in intricate appliances. Iris the Lab discovers this type of evidence within a few minutes. Best of all, she’s rather passive and calm throughout the entire process. When she finds the chips or small drives, she sits in place and waits for her reward. The officials may then pinpoint the necessary devices, bag them, and file them away as crucial evidence.

The FBI is, in fact, sending Iris out on many missions. She’s a furry superhero fighting ever-growing cybercrime. SD cards and other microscopic computer items are no match for her nose. She’s been trained to smell chemicals found in computers. After working to sniff out these particular chemicals for a month, she found herself beside her human partner, FBI agent Jeffrey Calandra. Together, they bonded and practiced searching for hidden devices for about six months. Whenever Iris locates a computer chip or card, whether during practice or a real investigation, she, of course, receives a treat and much praise.

Her name indicates a soft, dainty flower, and she really is quite pretty and even unassertive with her celebratory sitting. After all, most drug dogs jump and bark to alert agents of their discoveries. Aside from her gorgeous appearance, though, Iris is also a deeply intelligent, consistent, and focused animal. She’s necessary for catching the elusive bad guys. Though she doesn’t wear a cape or soar above cities, her sense of smell certainly seems to be a supernatural ability. It’s her secret weapon for sure, and she’s sharing it as she saves the helpless and the weak. She is a reminder that dogs are our best friends in so many ways.
