Introduction
Officially known as Santiago de Leon de Caracas, Caracas is the largest city and capital of Venezuela. Located along the Guaire river, the city is in the northern part of Venezuela and is thought to be one of the most important cultural, tourist, industrial and economic centers of Latin America. Caracas is located completely within a valley of the Venezuelan central range and is removed from the Caribbean coast by about a 9-mile part of El Avila National park.
Caracas offers not only plenty to see and do, but a myriad of unique name possibilities, one of which may be just right for your pup.
Caracas Dog Names in Pop Culture
Carlos Cruz-Diez is an artist that was born in Caracas and considered one of the greatest artistic innovators of the 20th and 21st centuries. Carlos is also the name of a Belgian Malinois who played the lead role in the canine adventure film “Max”. While five dogs of the breed participated in the filming, it was 3-year old Carlos who took the lead role. The film’s director, Boaz Yakin, explained that it was imperative to find a dog who was able to “headline” the film, stating, “without the right dog at the center, the whole movie just falls apart”.
Yakin felt confident that the very intelligent Belgian Malinois would be a fit for the role of a military service dog in war-torn Afghanistan who became despondent after the death of his handler, a Marine. The breed is becoming more popular among military and police, however as a result of the Belgian Malinois often having black eye markings, they are not always the best choice to film, since, according to Yakin, “the eyes are where the emotions are”.
Mark Forbes, an animal coordinator, found Carlos on a Kentucky farm after conducting a nationwide search. The pup, named after Vietnam War sniper Carlos Hathcock, has unique light face markings, making him ideal for the camera. And his focused personality and “true charisma” led to his being a stand-out among other contenders. Yakin explained, “the only problem was that Carlos was very temperamental. But (the trainers) felt they could work with him”. According to Yakin, the character of Max was based on Carlos. “When you see Max on screen, 80% of the time it’s Carlos”.
The facial features of four other Belgian Maliois dogs were dyed so that each of the four could assist in a particular area. One pup, named Jagger, was the main understudy, while “Dude” specialized in jumping, “Pilot” in knocking people down and playfighting and “Pax” for running shots. The dogs prepared and trained for three months in order to get the handle on tricks like fake lunging at people and climbing walls. Carlos, apparently, would do everything right in rehearsal, but upon shooting would do something different. According to Yakin, “it could drive you nuts. But a lot of times, the things Carlos did wrong were so interesting they got in the movie”.
