In Coco, there are plenty of representations of animals, especially in the Land of the Dead, where the Alebrijes live. But in the Land of the Living, they take the forms of regular animals to guide their humans.

Throughout the whole film we can also see Dante, Miguel’s Xoloitzcuintli pet. Miguel tries to keep his pet as a secret, but his Abuelita ends up discovering it and kicking the dog out. Dante is not particularly smart and he is actually quite prone to accidents, but he is truly loyal and he joins Miguel in the Land of the Dead, where the dog becomes an Alebrije. It turns out that, despite his lack of intelligence and grace, Dante is Miguel’s spirit guide, and he takes a great part in leading him home. During Miguel’s journey Dante is always trying to help Miguel and guide him towards Hector, his true great-great-great-grandfather.

In real life, Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolos dogs, are part of Mexico’s cultural heritage and this breed’s origins go back about 3,000 years.

The word Xoloitzcuintli has Aztect origins. ‘Xolotl’ is the Aztec god of the underworld and ‘itzcuintli’ means dog. In the Aztec culture, Xolos were created by the god Xolotl and his job was to guide the souls of the dead through the underworld on their way to heaven. There are still some remote Mexican villages who think of Xolos as healers. They are thought to cure different disorders like insomnia and asthma.
