Introduction
Cornish Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Cornish dog, Hattie, became known as Britain's fattest dog. She weighed an astounding 40kg when she arrived at Gables Farm in Devon. Many said she looked more like a round pot-bellied pig than a dog. Her previous owners were rumored to have fed her a diet of hamburgers and other unhealthy foods. The portly dog's caretakers started to call her Hattie the Fatty. She was placed in a stringent diet and exercise program. Eventually, she managed to slim down to 23kg.
When news of Hattie first hit the news media, hundreds of applications came in for the distinct dog. Many wanted to offer her a loving lifetime home but Ruth Rickard, Hattie's human foster mom, had fallen head-over-heels in love with the chunky pooch. Ruth told reporters, " I couldn't imagine her living with anyone else. I did get very attached to her and all her funny ways. She is such a lovely character, and she just deserves the best."
The care of Hattie was not easy. The dog was diagnosed as being morbidly obese, diabetic, and almost blind. Ruth, who is the deputy manager of the shelter, was one of many who mistakenly thought the dog was a pig when she first laid eyes on her.
Hattie was eight-years-old at the time of her rescue by the RSPCA. They had been called to take care of Hattie because of welfare concerns. Everyone at the shelter immediately started to focus on placing the Collie-cross on a strict diet and exercise program to help her lose weight.
The medical care of Hattie has not been cheap. Her bills have shot the shelter's budget through the roof. They have been forced to launch a fundraiser to cover her expenses. She requires twice-a-day insulin injections to control her diabetes. Once she started to lose weight, she also underwent cataracts surgery to restore her lagging vision.
Hattie no longer lives at the shelter. Now she lives with Ruth at her home which is only a short walk from the shelter's farmland. She has a canine buddy named Brady and a cat named Parker to play with during the day. Both the Brady and Parker were also former shelter animals who Ruth rescued and welcomed into her home.
After Hattie's arrival, a trend started to take place at the shelter. They also took in a Collie called Bopper the Whopper and a very overweight cat known as Large Marge.
Cornish Dog Name Considerations
Cornwall's history with dogs is long and diverse. There is even folklore about canines in the region. The phantom dog of Linkinhorn has been a story that has been told and retold for centuries. It involves a black ghost dog who regularly haunts locals. The ghostly apparition is said to roam the lonely roadside between Linkinhorne and Stoke Climsland which is near Callington, Cornwall. Many locals speculate that the canine ghost frequents the area looking for his long-lost owner. However, many say it is a demon dog or a shapeshifter. During the 1800s, there was a massive mine collapse that caused the death of numerous miners. After the mine cave-in, many locals started to see a single black dog or an entire pack of the beasts.
If you love everything Cornish, then why not name your furry buddy a truly unique name that focuses on Cornwall. Alfie is a cute Cornish name for a male dog. The name means wise counsel. Perhaps Evie for a sweet girl dog?
