Introduction
Whether you’re a diver yourself, just enjoy the sport or have a dog that dock dives, giving your canine companion a diving inspired name can be a great way to set them apart from the rest while bestowing them a title as meaningful as they are to you. There are plenty of options to choose from as well, such as naming them after a specific movement or dive type or even giving them the name of a favorite or famous diver. Whatever you happen to choose, rest assured all the time you spent diving into the depths of themed naming will pay off in the end.
Diving Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
While there may be a number of significant differences between traditional diving and doggy dock diving or jumping, they both still take a ton of skill and just as much practice. And just like those humans who have set the world on fire with historic performances, there are also dog celebrity athletes who are taking their game to a whole new level.
For anyone unfamiliar with dock diving, it’s a canine sport in which dogs are trained to jump as long and as far as possible off of a dock and into the water, their distance being the sole factor upon which they are judged. It originated around 1997 when Purina dog food held an organized event titled the “Incredible Dog Challenge” which featured the sport for the first time on a national level. Since then, competitions have spread worldwide and several internationally recognized organizations put events together annually.
One of the canine athlete celebrities to come out of the woodwork was Storie, who may not have a diving inspired name, but certainly has a foothold in the dock diving circles. Her story begins when she was just three weeks old, when her owner, J.D. McKnight and his wife, literally had the pick of the litter of black Labrador Retrievers and selected her as their new companion. They had owned other dogs previously, ones who had some potential agility skills, but even from an early age Storie seemed like had some inherent ability. When the couple saw dock diving on TV, they decided to have her give it a try.
After winning several events they registered her in, the two took Storie to the David Letterman show, where she not only won the event but tied the show’s previous record (it was actually the last year held before Letterman retired). She then went on to The Today Show and competed in the Incredible Dog Challenge.
But her true stardom emerged in December of 2015 when she competed at the Eukanuba National Championship. Storie originally had set the record at 30 feet but when another mixed breed challenged her by attaining a distance of 30 feet and six inches, she came back to top it again by going 30 feet and seven inches.
On top of being a dock diving champion, Storie is also said to be a great companion by her owners, with a skill set that expands beyond her records, including general agility, obedience and even barn hunting, all of which she holds titles in.
Diving Inspired Dog Name Considerations
When attempting to come up with an appropriate diving inspired dog name, the best course of action is to first list and consider your dog’s most prominent traits, such as their breed type, quirks, looks and personality, as these will be the easiest links to a good name.
For instance, you can always match your dog up with a diver of the same origin. For Chinese breeds such as Shar Peis, Pugs and Cresteds, the names Wu, Minxia, Guo, Jingjing, Qin and Kai would all be suitable.
Of course, if you want to dive a bit deeper in terms of meaning, try playing off of their quirks and personality. If your dog loves to flip or roll, the names Somersault, Tuck, Twist and Gainer would all be good options. For a dog that never quite succeeds on their first try, consider names like Bail, Balk and Crow. For those who are good or frequent jumpers, the names Springboard, Takeoff and Hurdle would all be good. For an uncoordinated dog or one who just loves to make a splash, the names Splash and Cannonball would certainly fit them.
There are plenty of ways you can go from basing it on a movement, technique, event, famous diving spot or even a famous diver, so dig in and see what category speaks to you and your dog most, then do some experimenting.
