Introduction
Whether you’re into electronic dance music or a DJ yourself, giving your dog a DJ-inspired name is an apt way to pay tribute to both your faithful friend and your favorite music. And realistically, they have a few things in common even if it doesn’t seem like it on the surface. Your dog is probably reliable as a beat, may like to dance (or show the appearance of dancing) when they’re excited, both dogs and DJs like most things that spin off tables (dinner or turn), and both will generally light up a room with their presence and the right people. So why not give them a name that says as much?
DJ Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Dogs can do some pretty amazing things if they’re exposed to anything long enough and have the interest to try. History has shown they have the capacity to learn golf, skateboarding, play basketball, dance and many others with a bit of training, some encouragement, and a lot of curiosity and dedication. But one dog took the next step in the evolution of canine talents: scratching turntables.
Starting in 2010, Mama, a French Bulldog belonging to Andreas Stevens of San Diego/Long Beach, better known by his performing name, DJ Greyboy, took the Internet by storm, garnering hundreds of thousands (and eventually millions) of views with a few videos of her scratching her owner’s turntables in tandem with him, trading off parts in a call and response type manner. She is featured in several videos that also went viral along with the first (though not quite to the same extent), each of which showcases her unique talent. While there may be a little extra help happening off-screen, her owner says she has shown interest in music, sitting at his feet whenever he is making music and does seem to have a bit of rhythm herself.
Outside of her Internet celebrity, she’s apparently a pretty normal French Bulldog. She was originally adopted through a friend and breeder, as Stevens has been an appreciator of French Bulldogs for quite a while and admittedly fell in love with her through her photo alone. She has many of the quintessential Frenchie qualities as well, being laid-back, docile, and tolerant (which is likely how Stevens got her to perform in the first place) and also has a significant food drive that acts as both motivation and curiosity — he says besides watching him make music, she loves to watch him cook.
But thanks to the status she gained online, Mama has also used her celebrity to further other dog-related issues, namely canine atopic dermatitis, a common allergic condition in dogs that causes them to become particularly itchy, making them scratch incessantly — and making for a perfectly marketable campaign package, a record-scratching DJ dog and a condition that causes significant itching. She was soon after picked up for an ad campaign and featured in a series of ads, as well as being invited to a convention as a celebrity guest, overshadowing her owner who had been a DJ in the industry for over two decades, as well as being nominated for Performing Pups at the World Dog Awards in 2015.
DJ Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Finding the right dog name can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you choose to roll with a themed name. Realistically, unless you have a dreadlocked dog breed and want to name your dog Skrillex, there’s not much you can do to match your dog with an artist aesthetically, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to go.
You can always go with a DJ term over an actual DJ name. For instance, if they have different colored ears than the rest of their head and it looks like they’re wearing headphones, then Phones would be a good pick the same way a dog with one different colored leg would be a perfect match for the name Bootleg (even if the meaning is different in this context). If your dog loves to scratch itself (or any of your furniture), then Scratch would be ideal for obvious reasons (or the name DJ itself, just so you can say to yourself “That DJ is always scratching”). If they love to bake in the sun and lounge outside on your deck or patio, then Dex or Decks would certainly suit them. For a dog that always barks in the same pattern, then Hook, Loop, Cue, and Remix would all be perfectly suitable.
There are tons of ways to conceive the name and find a good match, so don’t hesitate to get creative — and don’t forget to turn on some tunes for inspiration if need be.
