They decided to train her to be a seeing-eye dog and enrolled her in guide dog school. Unfortunately, she wasn't the best pupil. She would often become overly excited and even a bit hyper. Also, she was driven by scents. Her curious nature would have her following whatever smells her nose picked up. Her joy of odors is a trait that is frowned on in a guide dog so Lucy's future career plans became questionable. Ultimately, she was kicked out of the guide dog school.

Despite failing the school, Lucy's owners knew that she was smart and there was something special about her. She was clearly driven by her nose and her enjoyment of smells so they decided to have her trained in the medical field.

Lucy spent seven years training to sniff out cancerous tumors of the bladder, kidneys, and prostate. Her abilities are amazing. In fact, she was even used in major research studies.

Lucy has the ability to accurately detect cancer 95 percent of the time. Her detection accuracy outweighs the efficiency of many medical tests. In fact, it is so amazing that Lucy is now a part of one of the largest clinical trials ever created. The trial focuses on canine cancer detection. The organization Medical Detection Dogs, which is located in the UK, has eight canines enrolled in the study. The dogs actively sniff 3,000 urine samples that have been provided by National Health Service patients. The canines used in the study must use their noses to determine which samples contain possible cancer cells.

The use of K9s to detect cancer is relatively new. Claire Guest is the CEO of the Medical Detection Dogs. She is a firm believer in animal's abilities. Her own dog, Daisy, found her breast cancer years prior to founding the organization. Guest explains, "She kept staring at me and lunging into my chest. It led me to find a lump." Her physician said that her tumor was located deep within her breast tissue so undetectable by a conventional breast exam. However, Guest's dog had no problem finding the tumor.

Lucy and her canine comrades continue to impress the medical community with their cancer sniffing abilities.
