Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'al' in Pop Culture
Lassie may be a hero on television, but Endal was the most decorated dog in the world. Endal was a Labrador Retriever who was not just an average service or guide dog. He actually went above and beyond normal training to save his owner’s life more, and he did so while suffering from osteochondrosis (OCD) of his front legs. Endal was one of Britain’s best-known dogs and became the ambassador of service dog training and charities all across the world. In fact, Endal was on television several times, had a book written about him, and there was a movie made about his life.
Endal’s beginning was not as you would think. Actually, he was not working out well with the trainers and would not even do the simplest tasks for them. However, one day when Allan Parton went to work with his wife, Sandra, he and Endal found each other and realized that they were meant to be together. Allan, who had been injured in the Gulf War when serving the Royal Navy, was unable to walk, could barely speak, and had lost 50% of his memory. He was angry and bitter, stuck in his wheelchair and sitting in a corner while Endal was stubbornly sitting in the opposite corner ignoring his trainers.
When the two started working together, it was a bit difficult because Allen did not want to admit that he needed help with anything and Endal was still trying to do his own thing and suffering from the pain of his OCD as well. As they got closer, Allen and Endal decided to take a CPI course to help them both. While they both did well in the classes and graduated quickly, Allen had trouble bonding with Endal because he was afraid to get attached, thinking his canine companion may be taken from him at any time due to the pup’s painful condition.
However, after many trips to the veterinarian, changes in diet, and some physical therapy, Endal’s OCD got much better, and he was able to fully enjoy his duties as Allen’s service dog. There were so many times when Endal shocked and surprised Allen and others by the amazing abilities that he could do without even being taught. Removing clothing from the wash, helping retrieve his ATM card from the machine, and one day in 2014, Endal even saved Allen’s life after a car hit him, knocking him out of his wheelchair. This smart Labrador was able to put Allen in the recovery position, cover him with a blanket, and get his phone for him. Then he ran to get help, barking at hotel doors and then rushing back to Allen, where he stayed by his side through the rest of the ordeal, including in the hospital.
