Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'at' in Pop Culture
Meat is a very strange name for a dog. In fact, it is a strange name for anyone. However, the “Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show” was a pawpular show. Of course, it was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, so it had to be good. It was their attempt at doing more edgy cartoons like Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “The Ren and Stimpy Show.”
The show itself actually followed three different cartoon scenarios, which were “Shnookums and Meat,” “Pith Possum: Super Dynamic Possum of Tomorrow,” and “Tex Tinstar: The Best in the West.” In the “Shnookums and Meat” cartoon, a cat named Shnookums and a dog named Meat did not get along at all, but their owners constantly leave them home alone, where they get into all sorts of mischief.
The show was a spinoff of the Belgian comic strip “Marsupilami,” which was made by Andre Franquin and was part of what Disney called “Disney’s Raw Toonage.” The “Shnookums and Meat Show” was directed by Seth MacFarlane who also produced the very popular animated television series “Family Guy.” It lasted three seasons beginning in 1995 and ending in the same year.
The voice of Meat was done by Franklin Wendell Welker, who was an American voice actor. Frank is also known for his role as the voice of Fred Jones in the “Scooby Doo” cartoon. He was also the voice of Nibbler on “Futurama” and Megatron on the “Transformers” series and movies. In fact, Frank was so well liked that he got an Emmy Award in 2016.
Some of the episodes of “Shnookums and Meat” included "Jingle Bells, Something Smells," "Something Fishy," "Night of the Living Shnookums," "I.Q. You Too," and "Kung-Fu Kitty." The Pith Possum segment of the show was a spoof of the Batman comics where Pith Possum and his partner Obediah the Wonder Raccoon fought crime in Possum City for Commissioner Stress the Gorilla.
In the Tex Tinstar segment of the show, cowboy Tex Tinstar and his horse, Here Boy, lived in the Wild West with their friends. Smelly Deputy Chafe, Floyd the Insane Rattlesnake, and Percy Lacedaisy pursued a gang of outlaws called the Wrong Riders. The bad guys include Clem, Ian, and Wrongo.
Although the “Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show” seemed to be a hit at first, it was criticized for mimicking the characters and designs in the “Ren and Stimpy Show.” After 13 shows, the program was canceled in March of 1995 although you can still find reruns of the show on some cable channels.
Dog Name Ending in 'at' Considerations
One terrific way to choose your new pupster’s moniker is to hang out with them for a few hours or days to get to know them a bit better. Sometimes your furever friend will have a peculiar habit or quirk that helps you find the right title such as Dingbat for the silly pup, Copycat for the dog that likes to do whatever everyone else is doing, Spat for the antisocial dog, or Diplomat for the dogster that gets along with everyone. If you are not seeing anything that gives you an idea for a name, you could try naming them for their appearance such as Squat or Gnat for a petite pooch and Wombat for a big dog.
If you have a pup who is a bit of a politician at heart or seems to be in charge, you may like the names Bureaucrat, Autocrat, Democrat, or Plutocrat. Another idea is to get a name from pop culture like movies, books, or even video games. You may also want to choose a name that matches your hobbies, work, or something you love. For example, if you like games, Baccarat is a cute moniker and if you are into gymnastics or other physical sports, how about Acrobat? You can find inspiration from just about anything if you try.
