The word Aku has different meanings in different cultures. It can mean open or evil in Japanese but is a possessive determiner in Maori. It is also the name of a bear tracking dog. Aku is a Karelian Bear Dog that works with the Durham Police Department and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Aku’s job is to contain the Black Bear in Port Perry to Rosa and Paxton Streets. In his short career as a tracker, Aku has already retrieved stolen purses, tracked other goods, and even featured in the Port Perry Santa Parade in 2017.

Recently, Aku has been spending time with his handler Mike Jones at the bear tracking and hunting camp in Michigan. This camp has helped him improve his bear tracking skills. However, it’s not only natural talent that drives Aku but his breed’s affinity for hunting and tracking as well. Karelian Bear Dogs are tenacious hunters, avid protectors, and are exceptionally brave as well. They date back to Neolithic times as necessary for protection and hunting.

In recent years, they have become an integral part of many government departments, helping in bear management programs and worker protection during conservation work.

Another dog with a name ending in "ku" is Goku. Even though most people know Goku as the name of a Dragon Ball Z character, he is also the name of Bollywood actress Dish Patani’s dog. The markings in the photo of the dog show him to be a Rottweiler.

Disha shared photos of Goku on social media in late 2018 but drew criticism for giving him the name of the much-loved animated character. Many were quick to jump to her defense, however, especially given how cute her new puppy was!

It’s clear to see that dog names ending in "ku" are more common than you think because they even appear in the wolf world. The Wolves of Turku appeared in the 1880s, but for all the wrong reasons.
