Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'u' in Pop Culture
Kankuntu is a small village in the Gambia, West Africa but it is also the name of a very brave hero dog according to British businessman Peter Lee and his wife, Betty. They have a hunting hound they named Kankuntu who traveled along with them on their yacht as they were cruising around the world. In 2008, they were just off the coast of Venezuela when Peter noticed a small speedboat with five men aboard racing toward them. At first, he thought they might be hurt and needing help, but when he noticed that they had guns, he tried to turn his large boat toward them to ram them.
These men, who are actual pirates, were not deterred and continued to pull up alongside the Lee’s boat. In fact, one of the men took a couple of shots at Mr. Lee, so he decided to try to reason with them instead while Betty ran downstairs to hide. The pirates were not interested in reasoning with anyone and restrained Peter, tying him up and throwing him face-down on the deck with a gun to his head. That was when Kankuntu had enough and ran at the pirates, barking and biting them, trying to save his human.
Unfortunately, the pirates were not afraid of the brave pooch, and instead of leaving, they stabbed Kankuntu between the shoulder blades. When that did not stop the angry pup, another man shot him in the leg. Mr. Lee said that Kankuntu believes he is a lion and even though he is only about 50 pounds, he thinks he is much larger and will take on anyone, especially to protect his humans. He put up a good fight but could not get back up after being shot in the leg.
Luckily, the pirates left after only getting about £150 and some jewelry. They even tried to rip Betty’s wedding ring off her finger, but it wouldn’t budge, although they made her bleed. After that, the five men left the boat and fled, leaving the Lee’s shaken and scared with their hero dog bloody, stabbed, and shot. Betty untied her husband, and he took care of Kankuntu’s wounds, removing the bullet and cleaning and patching up the lacerations because they were so far from land and a veterinarian.
Although the pirates had taken their communication equipment, they had not been able to remove the GPS, so Peter was able to get them to Trinidad, where they got their hero pup to a hospital for treatment. The veterinarian treated Kankuntu’s injuries while the couple spoke to the authorities about the five men who robbed them and attempted to kill their best friend. Luckily, Kankuntu was fine and back on the boat within 24 hours as were the Lees, heading off to continue their trip around the world.
