Introduction
Dog Names Meaning Curly in Pop Culture
The Poodle is the most common curly dog breed in the world and is also the highlight of our pop culture spotlight for dogs with names that mean curly. Although his name, Rabbit, does not mean curly, he certainly is because Rabbit is a black Yorkie Poo who was born with super twisted locks. However, he wasn’t born with feet. That’s right; Nature forgot to add paws to the Poodle mix when they were getting him ready for the world. But that did not stop this curled cutie. He was hopping around like a rabbit from day one, which is how he got his name.
Rabbit, the Yorkie Poo, may be small, but he has the heart of a lion and the attitude of a giant. He may have been born without paws, but that did not make him pause. He was getting around any way he could from the minute he was in this world and was strong-willed enough that the rescue organization he was brought to, Bliss Animal Haven in Georgia, realized that he was going to go places, with or without paws. His owner had to give him up after becoming homeless herself.
Many owners or organizations may have thought he would not have a good life, so they would typically put a dog without feet down rather than giving them a chance. Luckily, those at Bliss Animal Haven saw the little furball hopping around and decided that he should get some feet to get around on. So, they started raising funds to get him some new legs.
These new prosthetic paws cost over a thousand dollars per leg, so it took a while, but they were able to raise the money, and a prosthetics company in Denver donated two of the legs for Rabbit. Because of the Denver donation, Rabbit was able to use the extra money for physical therapy to help learn to use the legs. Soon Rabbit was walking and even running around on his new legs.
Whitney Michielssen of Orlando, Florida saw Rabbit on an adoption website and decided she had to have him. Michielssen had never owned a dog before, but this pawless Poodle caught her eye, and she realized that the little hopping hero could give others with disabilities hope. In fact, Michielssen has been bringing Rabbit to hospitals and Disabled Vets organizations to let this curly little hopper light up their day.
Dog Name Meaning Curly Considerations
There are so many breeds of dog that have curly locks, and yours seems to be a twirly-haired canine too. Some of the most common breeds with curly coats include the Poodle, of course, and then there is the Curly Coated Retriever, Airedale Terrier, Puli, Lagotto Romagnolo, Barbet, Pumi, Kerry Blue Terrier, and Bichon Frise. Then there are the Portuguese and Spanish Water Dogs and the American and Irish Water Spaniels. Of course, there are all the designer and mixed breeds such as the Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Frenchie Bichon, Airedoodle, Kerry Beagle, and the list goes on and on.
