Dog Names Meaning Fox

The most famous foxy canines in the United States were an actual fox named Tod, and Copper, who was a Fox Hound in the 1967 novel “The Fox and the Hound” written by Daniel P. Mannix. This book was so popular that it won the Dutton Animal Book Award in 1967, the Reader’s Digest Book Club choice in 1967, and the Athenaeum Literary Award. This interesting story also became a Disney animated film in 1981, which won the Golden Screen Award in 1982. 

The story describes the lives of a Fox Hound puppy named Copper and a young orphaned fox named Tod that was raised by an animal lover, Widow Tweed. The two young fur buddies meet one summer and vow to be furever furiends. They spend every day playing when Copper is supposed to be learning to be a good hunting pup. Because Copper is not following the rules and learning to be a proper fox hunting dog, his owner Amos Slade decides to have his pride and joy hunting dog, Chief, train Copper. 

Amos catches Copper playing with the young fox several times and threatens to sic his dogs on Tod. But Copper is still friends with Tod and one day while they are playing, they accidentally wake Chief, who chases the fox. While chasing Tod, Chief is hit by a train and killed, which makes Amos really angry, so he threatens to kill Tod if he ever comes on his property again. Amos takes Copper on a hunting trip to train him since he no longer has Chief. 

When Copper returns from his trip a couple of months later, he is an adult and an experienced fox hunter so when Tod comes to visit him, Copper has to tell him that they cannot be friends anymore. Meanwhile, Amos is still angry at Tod for the loss of his best hunting buddy, Chief, and vows to hunt and kill him. The hunting pair finally ends up running into Tod one day, but Copper protects Tod and lets him run away. 

Another famous fox dog was President Hoover’s wire-haired Fox Terrier, Big Ben, who was named after the popular clock in London. Herbert Hoover was the 31st President, and he and his human family were very fond of their furry family, especially dogs. In fact, Hoover had eight different pooches during his four years in office, and his son even had a pair of alligators. 

Big Ben, who was just a tiny Terrier, was given to the family by a friend in Virginia as a Christmas present in 1929 when he was just a few months old. In fact, he was just a ball of white fur with dark eyes and a black nose when they got him, and he fit right in with the rest of the fur buddies.
