Introduction
Whether you’re an appreciator of entertainment or just happen to think that giving an animal a formal name is fun, cute or outright humorous, giving your dog a name that starts with Mr. is always a great option. Considering the history of the latter, there were certainly precedents set early on, likely even before it grew in popularity in the 20th century. And although it hasn’t always been exclusive to dogs, there are still plenty of reasons and ways to use or choose a mister-based name for your dog, from naming them after a favorite character to just wanting to set them apart from the rest of their “less formal” cohorts.
Dog Names That Start with Mr. in Pop Culture
Out of all the mister-based names on our list, one dog stands head and shoulders above the rest — and it doesn’t hurt that his anthropomorphism gives him a little boost in the height department — Mr. Peabody.
Hector Peabody, most often referred to as Mr. Peabody, was a hyper-intelligent bespectacled dog who originally appeared back in 1959 as a part of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, an animated television series. He was given his own segment titled “Peabody’s Improbable History” in which he travels back in time via his own creation, the WABAC Machine (pronounced “wayback”).
Although Mr. Peabody was the title character of the segment, he also shared it with a red-haired boy named Sherman, whom he rescued from a group of bullies only to discover that the boy was an orphan and therefore decided to adopt him. Though their personalities are quite different, the duo end up being the perfect match. Mr. Peabody is known to be the smartest being in existence and a refined and multifaceted one at that. Although he is “only” a Beagle, Mr. Peabody is revealed to not only be an inventor and scientist, but a business magnate, gourmand, Nobel laureate and even a two-time Olympic medalist.
In contrast, Sherman is still a boy, curious, a bit mischievous but still well-behaved thanks to Mr. Peabody’s firm guidance. Unlike his owner — as he’s often comically treated as a reversal of the normal human-dog dynamic structure — Sherman is also a bit slow, often taking a while to catch onto Mr. Peabody’s plans or making poor assumptions outright. But Peabody loves him anyway, as Sherman is actually the prime motivation for the creation of his time machine, an effort to give his adopted boy a bit of “running room” as well as modifying it so the two of them can actually influence the past instead of just simply viewing it — which often means historic figures acting out of character.
Outside of providing sheer entertainment, Mr. Peabody’s segment provides a bit of humorous commentary on figures and events of the past, allowing unfamiliar viewers to gain some slanted insight on history while familiar viewers get to enjoy the new take on classic people, themes or concepts. The duo maintained enough fanfare over the years that they were eventually given their own film as well as a television series.
Dog Name That Starts with Mr. Considerations
There are plenty of places to draw your inspiration from, so try to consider both their personality and your own interests so you can find a happy medium on your way to coming up with the perfect mister-inspired name. We suggest starting with a list of their most defining traits, then comparing them to those on our list, but you can always start with your interests first as well.
For instance, if they happen to be particularly smart, the names Mr. Peabody and Mr. Spock would both be suitable. If they’re quite muscular, then the names Mr. Olympia, Mr. T, Mr. Fixit and Mr. Freeze would all work. If your dog is your superhero, then the names Mr. Fantastic, Mr. Incredible or Mr. Miracle would all be good fits. If they have one specific trait that defines them beyond all else, such as being loud, then Mr. Men-based names like Mr. Noisy, Mr. Grumble or Mr. Chatterbox would all work.
Note: Don’t forget there are some great “Mrs.” names too, though for the sake of this guide, we’ve stuck with just the misters, even though some are included as potential female dog names as well (hint: you can just turn Mr. Into Mrs.).
