Obo II didn’t look anything like the American Cocker Spaniel you see today, but he is the father of the modern breed. Obo II also won many best-in-show titles during his showing years. He was a show dog born to Oboe and Chloe II, a sire and dam. He was born on August 7, 1882, and died on January 2, 1895.

James Farrow began breeding spaniels in the early 1870s and owned Obo’s namesake and sire. Records show that Obo was whelped in 1879, with text saying that Obo was “the greatest force in the revival of the Cocker.” His stock did so well in Britain that offers came from far and wide – including America, where J. P. Willey offered 100 guineas for one season of stud services. James turned the offer down.

J. P. didn’t get the dog he wanted, but he ended up buying Chloe II and mated her to Obo before shipping her to the United States. Chloe had three puppies – two males Obo (II) and Black Silk, and a female he called Black Gem. Unfortunately, Black Gem died from a viral disease called Distemper after winning an award at a New York Show.

Obo II had his first show in 1883 where he took out first place. He would go on to win several times more, as would his offspring.

When Obo died in 1895, his owner buried him on his property at Salmon Falls Village in Rollinsford. The gravesite is located behind Rollinsford Grade School and is registered with the Rollinsford Historical Society as a historical monument at the request of the American Spaniel Club.
