Dog Names that Start with Su

If you have to be a dog, being the dog of the President of the United States is the way to do it! Sunny is a Portuguese Water Dog, and she is one of the dogs owned by the former First Family, the Obamas. Sunny, who they named because of her sunny personality, was a little over a year old when they brought her home to the White House in August of 2013. The Obamas got her because Bo, their other Portuguese Water Dog needed another pup to socialize and play with and Sunny was the furfect choice. Bo was a gift from the late Senator Ted Kennedy who had his own Portuguese Water Dogs. 

Portuguese Water Dogs were not well-known before the Obamas introduced their pups, but now, they are extremely pawpular. And now that people know how awesome the breed is, they are even more widely known. These pups are typically about 40 to 50 pounds and stand around 20 inches tall, and they come in all different colors. Their coat is curly and silky, and they are considered to be hypoallergenic because they have hair instead of fur and they do not shed much. They are a working breed and have a high level of energy, so they need to have a routine with something to do every day.

The Portuguese Water Dog was discovered in 700 BC and were popular with the fishermen who used them to help catch the fish that tried to get away. Their coat is waterproof, and they even have webbed feet to help them swim. In addition, these canine kids are extremely intelligent and talented, not to mention sociable and gentle with kids and other pets. So, it makes perfect sense that the Obamas would choose another Portuguese Water Dog for their new family pet since they have children and another dog. 

Although life in the White House was probably pawesome for Sunny, she was especially happy to be moved into their new, more home-like setting after the Obamas left office in 2017. In fact, Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, said that although it took Sunny and Bo almost two years to realize what a doorbell was, now she enjoys running to the door when she hears it to greet their visitors. They love being “normal” dogs and enjoy going on long walks with the Obamas, visiting the local dog parks, and even going on official visits to hospitals and nursing homes sometimes. Sunny just loves people and enjoys being a dog.
