Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Ve' in Pop Culture
Velvet was a black Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepherd mix who was a true hero. When her owner, Matty Bryant of Milwaukie, Oregon and two of his friends decided to go climbing on February 18, 2007, they had no idea that bringing Velvet along would save their lives. The three friends and five other climbers were climbing on Mount Hood along with Velvet when a storm moved in and impeded their view.
The three friends and Velvet were all roped together for safety when one of them took a step off of an icy ledge, taking the others with them. The five other climbers went to report the accident, but the searchers were unable to go looking for them due to the worsening weather conditions. The three friends and Velvet had to spend the night on the mountain in terrible conditions with freezing temperatures in the low 20s and winds up to 70 miles per hour.
The climbers had their mountain locator units activated so that the rescuers would be able to track them but, in the meantime, they had to keep warm, and one of the women had a head injury. Velvet took turns cuddling up with each one of the climbers to keep them warm with her thick coat. Luckily, they had two sleeping bags with them, which they were able to huddle underneath overnight with Velvet until they were rescued the next day.
The climbers, their rescuers, and Velvet had to walk about 1,000 feet down to get to a snow vehicle that took them the rest of the way down to where the ambulance was waiting. The climbers told their story of how they spent the night after climbing to 8,300 feet and then were descending when the storm came in, and they slipped off a ledge and slid 500 feet down. They were lucky because just two months prior to this accident, three climbers went missing on the mountain and they only found one of their bodies, a woman who died of hypothermia.
In fact, the authorities stated that more than 35 climbers have died on Mount Hood, which is one of the most popular mountains in the world. Matty and his friends were all lucky to make it out, and none of them had any lasting injuries. Velvet was treated for minor cuts and some broken toenails, and the climbers were checked out at the local hospital and released.
