Introduction
Elf Dog Names in Pop Culture
We all know Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell), but we may not know a certain furry Buddy who lives and works in Rhode Island. This two-year-old Golden Retriever is typical in some ways. Golden Retrievers are known for being extremely loyal and friendly. Buddy is definitely a Mr. Congeniality, and he has one of the most unique gigs you’ve probably heard of. He works as a therapy dog. Not that unusual, right? He’s a therapy dog at a funeral home, though.
It’s not every day you go to pay your respects to someone who’s passed away and you are greeted by an adorable canine. I’d say it probably stops you in your tracks in the best of ways. Greenville, Rhode Island, is truly lucky to have such a trusty companion around. Winfield Funeral Home owner, Tommy Winfield, admits, “He has something, and that something disarms people.” All dog owners and lovers nod their heads in unison on that one. We know what he’s talking about. There’s something about those compassionate doggos that makes everything okay. They make you feel safe, loved, and admired instantly. Nobody says, “You’re going to be all right,” like a dog.
They say Buddy has been trained to care about people, both young and old, as a therapy dog. I have to say, though, some things don’t have to be taught. Deep down, Buddy probably naturally cares. It’s just in some dogs’ nature to care. However, Buddy has been coached to see humans in tears and other forms of distress and to do his best to nurture them. The staff at Winfield says that Buddy makes their job a little easier. He takes on part of the heavy load of death and helps everyone bear it.
In one of the most touching moments at the funeral home, an Iraqi War veteran knelt down and encouraged Buddy to come over. Whether Buddy could sense the PTSD or not, the dog simply leaned on the former soldier as if to say, “We’re in this together. Don’t feel alone.” Ironically, dogs teach us so many lessons about humanity. He never withholds judgment. He just embraces all who call to him. He understands when he’s not wanted or unwelcome. Buddy simply stays put and loves you from a distance. If you, after a while, warm up to him, he forgives quickly. At the darkest moments of people’s lives, Buddy is a light guiding you back home.
Elf Dog Name Considerations
Many larger dogs actually have this mindset that they’re little. You can adopt a 75-pounder who thinks they’re actually an 8-pound lapdog. It’s pretty comical, and it’s also reminiscent of Buddy the Elf, trying to fit his tall stature into Santa’s elves’ shower, desks, and, well, everything. Leon the Snowman is the one to suggest, “Of course you’re not an elf. You’re six-foot-three and had a beard since you were fifteen.” Buddy sees himself as one of the teeny toy makers, but he’s a huge man! He’s, indeed, too large to really fit on Papa Elf’s lap. It’s a charming kind of denial.
The name “Buddy” is a gem for obvious reasons. I mean, this little guy or gal is your best friend. But you might even choose to give the title “Smiley,” “Snuggles,” “Muggins,” or “Syrup” to your pup as a nod to your favorite holiday elf. If you’ve got a grumpy-faced darling on your hands, think about “Miles,” “Gimbel,” “Naughty,” or “Hobbs.” If your pooch is rather lively, consider “Cheer,” “Jovie,” “Leon,” or even “Santa.” Even some of the actors’ and actresses’ real names might be fitting: “Will,” “Zooey,” “Dink,” or “Mary.” Finally, if you have a pair of dogs who need dynamic duo names, try “Swirly” and “Twirly.” They are your sweet gumdrops, after all!
