Reading to animals has been found to help kids gain confidence as well as improve their reading and social skills. This idea seems to have caught on in Estonia, where a library has been working with children and dogs in an effort to help children develop their skills. Tentel, a long-haired Afghan Hound, Elli, a Gold Retriever and Leero, a Newfoundland, are ready participants at the library in Tartu, where they listen to kids read twice a month. The manager of the project, Ewa Roots, stated: “for kids who have problems with reading or low self-esteem, there is no better therapy than to practice reading aloud to a dog”. Roots continued to explain that dogs are calm when listening and unlike other children or adults, won’t ever be critical when a child makes a mistake during their reading.

The project is free of charge and available to all children who are interested in participating. The majority of kids involved are five to six years of age, while there are kids of all ages who come to read to the pups. Literacy rates are high in Estonia; with 100% of citizens aged 15 and older able to read according to World Bank figures. Estonia is known as an IT trailblazer and is considered one of the most connected countries in the world. Still, Estonia values low-tech opportunities as demonstrated at the library.

The program encourages youth to have eight to 10 half-hour sessions of reading to a dog after choosing which pup they would like to read to. Children can bring their own books or read a book or more, available at the library.

Otto Wilhelm von Struve is a well-known astronomer who was born in Estonia. It turns out that Otto is also the name of a well-known pup who managed to get into the Guinness Book of Records. A Bulldog, Otto made it into the record books after not only skateboarding, but skateboarding under the longest human tunnel. Otto accomplished this in Lima, Peru when he got on his skateboard and glided under the legs of 30 individuals. Footage of his efforts shows him jump on his skateboard and ride through the legs, steering as he pushes himself along on his board.
