Introduction
Located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Home to over 102 million people, Ethiopia is the world’s most populated landlocked country. Some of the oldest skeletal evidence of modern humans has been found in the country, which includes a land area of 420,000 square miles. A multilingual nation, Ethiopia has around 80 ethnolinguistic groups. Diversity is found in its landscape as well, with forests, many rivers, mountain ranges and caves. The most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa are found in Ethiopia, as well as the world’s hottest settlement of Dallol.

Ethiopia Dog Names in Pop Culture
Ayana was a street dog in Ethiopia, struggling to survive on scraps of food she would find on the streets of Addis Ababa. After she was injured and her hind legs paralyzed, things became even more difficult. Typically, a dog in that situation in Ethiopia, that has little organized animal rescue and minimal veterinary resources, has next to no chance to survive, much less thrive. Fortunately, with some lucky timing and an international network of animal activists, Ayana found her way to Stillwater, Oklahoma and a veterinary technician who has a history of rescuing dogs from faraway places.
Ayana was found in Ethiopia on the ground close to a sewage ditch in an undeveloped part of the city of Addis Ababa. She was clearly in a lot of pain and local vets felt that she would not be able to recover from her injuries. Claudia Neto of PATA Mozambique, an animal rescue organization and her colleague Eduarda Cardoso knew that the pup would not survive in Ethiopia. They had met veterinary technician Jill Murray online and reached out to her, hoping that she could help by giving them ideas of resources in the United States or Canada that could help Ayana. Murray, who works as a veterinary technician in Oklahoma State University’s Animal Resources Department, has provided a home for several dogs who were paralyzed in the past; one of which was from South America.
Murray tried to find resources for the pup, but ultimately decided that the best place for the pooch to recover would be with her in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Fortunately, things fell into place. A Spanish rescue organization helped to raise money for expenses for Ayana’s vaccines and travel arrangements. An employee of the U.S. Embassy who was returning to the United States, offered to accompany Ayana on her flight. From the time of Ayana’s rescue to arriving in her new home in Oklahoma, only ten days passed. In only ten weeks with Murray, the pup is putting on weight and learning to trust people. Ayana is a playful pup who enjoys tug of war and who seems to like life as an American indoor dog.
Murray is not in a position to keep Ayana but is determined to find her the right forever home. With a little extra effort, she can have a long and happy life, despite her injuries.
