Introduction
Chances are if you’re looking to give your dog a famous entrepreneur’s name, you’re likely an entrepreneur yourself or are at least inspired by some of history’s great minds that have successfully blurred the lines between invention, problem solving, and business. In the modern era, that is easier than ever, as many pet owners have even turned their dogs into big enough Internet celebrities to make a living off of it, and that’s no joke. Whether these dogs are actors, models, or just popular on social media, they’ve opened considerable doors for their owners and created an entirely new branch of modern entrepreneurs. So whether you’re just picking a name for your low-key pet or about to attribute a title to a soon-to-be online sensation, make sure you find one that sticks for good reason - you never know where it might end up.
Famous Entrepreneur Dog Names in Pop Culture
Ok, so Tuna does not have the name of a famous entrepreneur, but his owner, Courtney Dasher, certainly used him to become one.
Tuna, who is now a social media sensation, was once an abandoned Chihuahua/Dachshund mix who was recused outside of San Diego and taken to a Los Angeles farmer’s market, where he was put up for adoption. Dasher, now his owner, originally took him in with the aim of fostering him until a new home was found, but quickly fell in love with him, thanks in no small part to his unconventional look — he has a severe overbite, an underdeveloped lower jaw and a highly-wrinkled neck to match.
But Dasher wasn’t the only one to fall in love with him and his goofy look. After she created an Instagram page for him and took a few photos, Instagram featured one of them on their website, generating a significant amount of exposure and interest which quickly translated into a mass of followers. Reddit users took it a step further when they turned one of Tuna’s photos into a popular meme, which in turn created even more buzz about the atypical-looking dog and added significant number of additional followers. By 2015, three years after his Instagram page had been started, Tuna had 1.3 million followers.
Dasher, looking to do something productive with her opportunity, took advantage of his popularity by volunteering him for events to benefit animal rescue efforts and shelters. She was even reached out to by a book publisher, who gave her creative freedom to write and develop a book about him, which was aptly titled Tuna Melts My Heart: The Underdog with The Overbite. After its release in 2015, Tuna even went on a book tour to support it with many of the events benefiting animal rescue organizations. He and his owner were also featured in a promotion for the women’s magazine Marie Curie, where the pair took over their Instagram account for a day and later made a TV appearance in support of it.
Of course, Dasher and Tuna aren’t the only ones who have used the Internet to take the entrepreneurial spirit in stride. Boo the Pomeranian has over 17 million followers. Maru the Shiba Inu has over 2.6 and has been turned into one of the biggest memes in recent memory. Marnie the Shih Tzu has over 2.1 million. And of course, that doesn’t count Toast, Scout, Harlow and Sage, Manny the Frenchie or Sprout, plus many more who have also reaped the social and financial benefits of just being themselves and being put on the Internet.
Famous Entrepreneur Dog Name Considerations
Finding a good name goes far beyond just randomly picking one and sticking to it. But that doesn’t mean you need to be a groundbreaking genius like those you may be naming them after to find the perfect name, you just need to find one that does justice to your dog and your own level of creativity, and there are lots of avenues to approach it from.
Generally speaking, personality provides the most accessible traits you can use in making your decision, both yours and your dog’s. For instance, if you are a dedicated computer user and your dog faithfully sits in your lap while you type away or they love to sleep by the warm, humming tower, maybe Gates, Hewlett, Dell, or Woz would be good options, especially if they attempt to do any typing themselves — on purpose or accidentally. If you and they both love hamburgers, maybe Kroc after Ray Kroc, the man who put McDonald’s on the map, would be a good option. If you want to attribute them some flash and glam, maybe Coco or Chanel would be good choices, as both have direct associations with high fashion.
Or maybe you want to add some subtle humor to their name. If they are tough as steel, naming them Carnegie would be a good place to start, or if they’re always just a little bit oily, maybe Rockefeller is a better fit. If they’re extremely fast but never seem to use any energy, Elon or Musk might be good, after one of the founder’s of Tesla Motors or if they seem to have a lightning bolt shape on their head, Rowling may be the perfect fit.
There are a ton of potential options but more importantly, just as many ways to get creative, so don’t limit yourself. Think outside the box like those you could be naming them after.
