Introduction
It may not have been the absolute most popular show during Nickelodeon’s golden age (the 90s) but Hey Arnold! is still a favorite of many and for good reason. While it centered around the golden-haired cap-wearing kid we’ve all come to know and love, it also showcased the inner city life of a wide variety of kids from the wealthy to those without any semblance of privilege. Through 100 television episodes and two movies, it provided entertaining and ethical programming complete with a cast of unique characters that not only made the show rich and fun, but for our purposes, also doubles as a list of fantastic dog names.
Hey Arnold! Dog Names in Pop Culture
When it comes to having a massive cast, Hey Arnold! is near the top of the list, as it has nearly as many characters as it does episodes, if not more. But people aren’t the only subjects the show features. On average, it introduced one animal character every six episodes, and even more surprisingly, very few of them were conventional pets.
While most of these animals play pretty minor parts, there are several others that play a much more pivotal role in the series’ larger storylines, including Grandpa’s favorite animal in the world: his childhood dog Pooter.
Pooter was originally a Scottish Terrier Grandpa and his twin sister Mitzi owned when they were kids. He was beloved by both siblings, spending a great deal of time with them playing in the yard. One day Pooter dug a hole under the fence and got out. Phil and Mitzi looked everywhere for him but by the time the found him, he had been hit by a milk truck and had to be raced to the vet. Unfortunately, his injuries were too severe and he had to be put down. His death was the impetus of a 71-year silence between the two, each of them blaming each other for the tragedy.
But there’s one other dog-like animal that also had a huge impact on the biggest storyline the series (and then films) had to offer: Abner, Arnold’s pet pig. Out of all the animals featured in the series, Abner easily gets the most screen time, appearing in 13 different episodes and both movies. He is portrayed very similarly to a dog, showing high intelligence and a canine-dose of loyalty. His story, however, is the most important aspect of his existence. Both Arnold and the show’s viewers are kept in the dark as to the mysterious disappearance of Arnold’s parents throughout the series but in the final episode, it is revealed that Abner was actually a gift from the “Green-Eyed people” to his parents, who were attempting to save their village from sickness. As such, Abner acts as the final link between Arnold and his parents, a fact that is fleshed out in its entirety during Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, making him the single most important animal ever featured on the show. And while he may not be a dog, his attitude, faithfulness, adventurous nature and intelligence are perfect comparisons to the type of companionship we derive from animals, dogs or otherwise.
Hey Arnold! Dog Name Considerations
Given the sprawling cast of the series and its follow-up films, it won’t likely be an easy task to find an appropriate Hey Arnold! name for your dog unless you plan to simply name them after your favorite character. If you want a bit more depth and meaning to the name, however, consider compiling a list of their most defining traits and using it as a resource to compare them to characters from the show.
For instance, if your dog tends to be a bit polarizing, loving you one minute then being stubborn the next, the names Helga or Pataki would both be suitable. If they are exceptionally smart and patient, then the names Phoebe and Heyerdahl are good options. If they tend to be a bit off the wall or unpredictable, then the names Gertrude or Pookie would be perfect fits. For a dog that is both lanky and never seems to smell clean, the name Stinky would be ideal.
Of course, there are plenty of different directions you can take the naming process from naming them after a favorite episode to giving them the name of someone from the series who has a similar element to their aesthetic, so keep your options open and keep trying until something sticks out as far as Arnold’s head and hair.
