Introduction
Located in the Northwestern area of the United States, Idaho is the 7th least densely populated state. The northern part of the state, the Idaho Panhandle, utilizes the Pacific Time Zone, while the rest of the state uses the Mountain Time Zone. The state is rather mountainous and includes multiple stretches of the Rocky Mountains. Known as the “Gem State” for its reputation for gemstones, and numerous wilderness areas, when it comes to agriculture, the state is best known for its potato crop; one-third of the potatoes grown in the country are from Idaho.
An Idaho-inspired name is something to consider when seeking a name for your pooch. A state that offers a lot of variety, Idaho will have plenty of options for just the right moniker.
Idaho Dog Names in Pop Culture
A well-known Idaho dog is Mo, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who made international headlines after spending nine months on her own in the Idaho wilderness. Mo was found close to death on a ranch in Horseshoe Bend prior to being reunited with her family in Boise, Darwin and Cindy Cameron. During her time away, Mo had gone into survival mode, which continued as she settled back into her life at home. The Darwin’s report that she acts more like her old self with each passing week, however signs of her experience remain. The elderly dog initially experienced panic attacks, which led her to clear out a small den under the deck of her home where she would go to hide to feel safe. Mo also grabbed and ate a sparrow that that was nibbling at a bird feeder, something that the Cameron’s had not seen her do. The Cameron’s hypothesized that because Mo was too old to chase and catch squirrels, and few animals were around in the cold winter weather, she learned to hunt birds. Mo continues to ration her food and avoids the family camper that she used to love. In fact, if Darwin enters the camper, Mo runs for her den under the deck. The camper is the last place that Mo was before going missing when she went looking for Darwin, who had gone to get some tools. Mo turned 14 while she was missing and the Cameron’s intend to make the most of their time with her now that she has returned.
A well-known, two-legged dog from Washington was lost in East Idaho following a car accident where the dog, named Duncan Lou Who, was ejected from the car after it struck a bison. Duncan, a Boxer, is known worldwide from his YouTube videos. One video, where he visits the beach for the first time, has been viewed almost seven million times. After a night spent searching for the missing canine, Duncan was found, and though dehydrated and limping, he was in good shape with a few scrapes and cuts. Fortunately, Duncan was expected to make a full recovery.
A famous Idaho dog is not actually a real dog; Sweet Willy, who at 30 feet tall is the biggest Beagle in the world, is a bed and breakfast built by chainsaw artists Dennis J. Sullivan and his wife Frances Conklin. Dog Bark Park, where Sweet Willy is located, is a tourist attraction of its own, with other wooden sculptures of animals (like bears, moose and fish) to be seen. This unique attraction is located in north central Idaho.
