Erby

While deployed in Iraq, Sgt. Tracy McKithern, a combat photographer, fell in love with a puppy. In April 2017, she was in Erbil, Iraq when she came across a very dirty white pup. The pooch was sniffing around the camp. She learned from her fellow soldiers that the pup’s mom had had a litter of three dogs; however, two of the puppies had disappeared. Unfortunately, streets dogs are often abused in Iraq, and McKithern learned that the puppy and her mom had been kicked and pelted with rocks. Though she had experienced such poor treatment by humans, the puppy immediately responded to the officers. The soldiers named the puppy Erby Kaisma. Erby was in honor of the city of Erbil while Kaisma means “beauty and elegance” in Arabic. According to McKithern, Erby loved everyone and became the unofficial mascot of the team, waiting for them each time they returned to base. She would run to the convoy each day to greet the team upon their arrival. Erby and her mom healed from their wounds and their strength increased as a result of the food they got from the soldiers. Erby bonded in particular with McKithern and would sleep outside her quarters every night.

As the end of her deployment got closer, McKithern started to dread the idea of leaving Erby behind. She posted a photo of her and Erby on Facebook, with a message that she wished she could take the pup home. According to McKithern, her friends and family responded to her post with links to various rescue organizations. After reaching out to them, the non-profit Puppy Rescue Mission, responded immediately. Money was raised through crowdfunding and with the help of some of the officers she met in Iraq, McKithern was able to have Erby vaccinated, her documents prepared and travel arrangements made. Just a few weeks after McKithern arrived in Florida, Erby followed. A slight obstacle delayed their reunion as McKithern was sent on a 67-day mission to Wisconsin the day before Erby arrived. Fortunately, her husband was able to take good care of Erby until she returned. Together again, Erby and McKithern’s bond can continue to grow. Erby’s mom remains in Iraq, where she still receives care from the soldiers at the camp. It is McKithern’s hope that she will also be adopted and ultimately have a forever home like her pup.
