An Israeli dog named Thomas has 10,000 fans in social media. With the handle “Thomas Wants Food”, the seven-year-old Golden Retriever is well known for taking selfies with the culinary delights of Israel. His owner, Yael Kraus, a 24-year-old student, explains that he is regularly recognized and called for on the street. She and her sister uploaded photos of Thomas to an Instagram account and their friends loved the images of the pooch and the tasty looking food. He later got his own Facebook and SnapChat accounts. While they began the project for fun, the soon noticed that the photos impacted how people worldwide saw Israel. Thomas garnered fans from all over, including Pakistan and Azerbaijan. As they realized this, they started taking things more seriously and try to visit places with different types of food. Kraus stated that her siblings and their parents help come up with ideas of where to go and what food items showcase. The shoots occur three times a week and can take a few minutes to a few hours.

Through her pooch, Kraus is managing to introduce her followers to the variety of foods in Israel that blend a little bit of heritage and some tradition and combines it into a new Israeli blend. Thomas usually sticks to his dog food, despite the appeal of the dishes before him, though he may sneak a bit of something that interests him on occasion. According to Kraus, Thomas’s celebrity has garnered them invited to particular places to take photos, however before committing, she and her family discuss whether the invitation is a fit for their mission, which is to show people the nice sides of Israel.

Another well-known dog in Israel is Kaya, a 10-year-old Husky Mix who was adopted by Israel’s first family, the Netanyahus. The prime minister’s son Avner heard that Kaya was about to be euthanized and asked his family to adopt her. He assured his constituents that Kaya was “gentle and of a good disposition”. It turned out that that was not quite the case; Kaya bit a few folks, including the prime minister. Israeli law says that a dog who had bitten a person has to be quarantined in a municipal pound for 10 days to confirm that it was not rapid. The prime minister decided to help drive legislation so that dogs that committed this offense could remain under house arrest instead. Kaya again made headlines when she pooped during a walk in a park in Jerusalem, after a photo was taken on a passerby’s cell phone and Yair Netanyahu, the prime minister’s son, was accused of not scooping the poop.
