As the Wicked Witch of the West tries to claim the ruby slippers that belonged to her sister, Glinda manages to move them onto Dorothy’s feet first. Dorothy finds out that her only chance to return home is to meet with the Wizard of Oz and ask him to fulfill her wish. Glinda advises Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to Emerald City, where the wizard resides. During the journey, Dorothy and Toto meet the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Man. The three join Dorothy and Toto on their trip, hoping to have their own requests filled by the Wizard.

While the journey is difficult, and includes a run-in with the Wicked Witch of the West, Toto winds up being a huge help for Dorothy and their new friends. When they do meet with the Wizard, it is Toto who pulls back the curtain to reveal that the Wizard is, in fact, an ordinary man. Toto is ultimately a hero in the story and for that reason, as well as the fact that Dorothy wound up in Oz as a result of her efforts to keep Toto from being put down, when considering a Kansas-inspired name, Toto is a good one to mull over.
