Introduction
In 1955, the animated movie Lady and the Tramp made its debut. It was the 15th film produced by Walt Disney. The hit most picture was also the first animated film ever filmed using the CinemaScope widescreen process. The feature-length film was based off a novel written by Ward Green called 'Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog'. The show was marketed as the ‘happiest motion picture’ and there is little doubt that it lives on in the viewer’s memory. If you are a true blue fan of Lady and the Tramp then it is only natural to want to name your new canine buddy after the animated special. Growing up, most people enjoyed the movie and quickly fell in love with Lady and the Tramp.
Lady and the Tramp Dog Names in Pop Culture
In the film Lady and the Tramp, Lady lives an upscale life with her human family Jim Dear and his wife Darling. In the same town, a mutt by the name of Tramp lives alone. He uses his cunning and skills to steal scraps of food. He and his fellow dog friends spend their time trying to avoid the dog catcher
Lady’s picture-perfect life is upset when her owners start treating her differently and she learns that they are going to have a baby. When Jim and Darling leave for a trip they leave Lady in the custody of Aunt Sarah who owns two Siamese cats named Si and Am. The cats instantly don’t like Lady and want to take over the house. They make a mess and Aunt Sarah believes that Lady attacked the cats so she muzzles her. Aunt Sarah takes Lady to a pet store to get rid of her. Poor Lady panics and runs away. She is chased by a pack of stray dogs but Tramp rescues her. He quickly takes her to a friendly beaver to have her muzzle removed.
Lady starts to fall for Tramp but she is caught by the dog catcher and placed in the pound. Once in the pound, the other dogs start to gossip and tell her that Tramp always has multiple girlfriends and will never settle down. Aunt Sarah finds Lady at the pound and bails her out. Once home, Aunt Sarah chains Lady in the backyard to punish her. Tramp tries to come talk to her and rescue her but she is mad at him over his playboy lifestyle.
While visiting each other, they see a huge rat enter the home. Tramp immediately chases the rat and kills it but Aunt Sarah thinks that Lady and the Tramp are out of control. She has Tramp removed by the dog catcher and taken to the pound. Finally, Lady’s owners come home and Lady is able to show them the dead rat so they understand what happened.
In the end, Lady’s family adopts Tramp so that Lady and the Tramp can spend their lives together. The final scene of the movie shows that Lady and Tramp have had a litter of puppies together. Throughout the classic film, Lady is portrayed as a soft-spoken dog who endears herself to the viewers. Tramp is a rascal but the audience can clearly understand why Lady adores him. Eventually, Lady and the Tramp would be followed by Lady and the Tramp II.
Lady and the Tramp Dog Name Considerations
The origins of the classic are a part of Walt Disney history. In 1937, Joe Grant, one of Disney’s premier storytellers, was moved to create a story based on his own life. He watched his English Springer Spaniel Lady closely and observed how she would often get shoved aside by Joe’s new baby. He immediately started to sketch Lady and showed them to Walt Disney. As soon as Mr. Disney saw the sketches he instantly enlisted Joe to create an animated feature called 'Lady'. For a decade, Joe and others worked on the storyline but Mr. Disney did not care for any of them. He felt like none of the storylines contained enough action.
During the 1940's, Mr. Disney read Ward Green’s short story in Cosmopolitan magazine. He instantly thought of Lady. He wanted Lady to fall in love with a scamp. The creators of the storyline threw many names around such as Bozo, Homer, and Rags but they ultimately decided that Lady’s love interest would be a mutt named Tramp.
In 1949, Grant left Disney Studios but his drawings of Lady remained and were used to create the animated film. By 1953, the story had been successfully worked out. Prior to the film’s debut, Disney released a novelization of the story so that fans already knew about Lady before the film hit the theater. The biggest and most classic scene in the movie depicts Lady and the Tramp enjoying spaghetti. They each slurp one noodle piece until their lips come close to a kiss. Interestingly, Mr. Disney initially wanted to cut the scene because he felt it was too silly. Lady’s physical appearance is that of an American Cocker Spaniel but her likeness was also similar to the early drawings that Joe Green did of his Springer Spaniel. She is a sweet, doe-eyed dog that quickly wins the viewer's heart.
