Lesotho, or the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a country within South Africa’s border. It’s landlocked, covers over 11 and a half thousand square miles, and has a population of around two million people. Lesotho is also a part of the United Nations, and its name translates to the land of the people who speak Sesotho.
There’s no denying that Lesotho is a unique country, which is why it might be that people start looking for Lesotho dog names. Whether you want to remember where you came from, or you’re proud of the place you call home, then it can be quite rewarding to give your dog a name that relates to the country and its people. Read on to find out more.
Lesotho Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are several thousand dogs in pop culture, but that doesn’t mean it’s all that easy to find famous dogs in Lesotho. However, if you want to be able to give your dog’s name a back story, it’s helpful if there are dogs in pop culture who share it too. One such name is Sam. Sam is both a famous Mosotho football player and a dog in pop culture.
Sam Ketsekile was born in 1981 and played the position of goalkeeper for the Lesotho Prison Service. He has also won 15 caps since 2007 for the Lesotho national football team. From 2007 to 2008 he played for the Roma Rovers, before switching to the Mazenod Swallows in 2008, then the Lesotho Prison Service in 2009.
Sam is also the name of two prominent dogs in pop culture – Sam from the 2007 film I Am Legend with Will Smith, and a blind Chinese-Crested hairless dog. The blind dog shot to fame for being a three-time winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. Imagine the hilarity that would ensue when you tell your friends and family that not only does your dog’s name come from a Lesotho football player, but the world’s ugliest dog too!
Sam or Samantha from I Am Legend is also a German Shepherd owned by US Army virologist Robert Neville. Robert and his dog, Sam, are two of the few survivors left in the world after a cancer cure virus goes wrong and turns the world’s population into mutants. Robert is immune and fights to find a cure.
Sam ends up bitten by a mutant and Robert has to strangle her to death to stop her from turning into one too. He goes on to successfully find a cure and takes it to a survivor camp to try and rebuild the world.
The dog that played the role of Sam is Abbey. The film directors asked the training company Animals of Distinction to find a female German Shepherd to suit the part. Abbey didn’t come from an acting or training background, so the team had to get to work quickly to set up training foundations. According to trainer and owner Steve Berens, it was stressful at first, but Abbey was a quick learner.
As of September 2018, Abbey was 13 years old and enjoying her retirement years with her family and original trainer. Even though she’s past her acting years and is now quite deaf, she likes to relax at home, sleep, eat a bone from time to time and play with her ball.
Lesotho Dog Name Considerations
When it comes to looking for Lesotho dog names, you will soon discover that there are endless options available. Anything and anyone relating to Lesotho can become a beautiful dog name worthy of your attention. Before you start the search, however, start thinking about what could make or break the dog name selection.
First off, consider your dog’s gender. Will it impact the name you give them? If you are naming your dog after Lesotho local celebrities and standout members of society, then you would likely pick a gender-specific name. However, many names and words relating to Lesotho can be unisex too – such as the name Sam.
Next, look at your pup’s personality – if you know it yet. Some words and nouns will suit some dogs better than others. If your dog is a little bit cheeky, then why not get creative with languages? Cheke is cheeky in Southern Sotho language and also makes an excellent Lesotho dog name. Or, you could draw on their relatability with names like Ntja – meaning dog, Basali meaning female, and Motona, meaning male.
As you can see, there are options aplenty when it comes to Lesotho dog names. Take the time to learn a bit about this unique country before potentially choosing a name that doesn’t suit your new pup.
