Introduction
Feeling a bit LOST in trying to find a name for your dog? Well, don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do, because we’re here to help! At the time of its original airing, LOST was one of the hottest shows on television and for good reason. Outside of having an ultra-riveting plot line, it also boasted a fantastic cast of characters with a vast array of identifiable names and about as much mystery as you could pack into one series. So if you’re looking to figure out where to start in finding a great LOST-themed dog name, look no further than our own little paradise island of naming ideas — and don’t worry, this one doesn’t have a creepy black cloud lurking around.
LOST Dog Names in Pop Culture
While Lost certainly featured its fair share of endearing characters, for dog lovers and others alike, Vincent may have been one of the most universally beloved over the course of the show — of course is doesn’t hurt that, unlike many fellow cast members, he actually lasts the entirety of the series and is featured in 43 of the shows 121 episodes.
Vincent, played by a Hawaii-native Labrador Retriever named Madison, was not only just a faithful companion during the show, but actually drove much of the storyline.
In the very first few episodes, Vincent, who is Walt’s dog, sets up the contemptuous relationship that Walt has with his biological father Michael Dawson, as the prior is often found wandering around the island in search of the seemingly autonomous dog to his father’s chagrin. When Michael finally agrees to look for Vincent to appeal to his son, Locke makes a whistle to call the dog with, then allows Michael to return to Walt with Vincent in an effort to improve their relationship. Later in the season, Vincent alerts the survivors when boars are invading their camp as well as well as luring several survivors into the jungle to open up more of the story and characters.
Before the end of the first season, he had transferred ownership to Shannon and played a comfort to her and provided her a job after losing her step-brother Boone. He stayed by her side, including through her visions of Walt that eventually led to her passing, just before Michael returned to the island to be reunited with him. For the remainder of the season, he befriends numerous other members of the island, playing a faithful companion to all.
In season 3, he begins to launch other aspects of the storyline. When he brings out the arm of a deceased person, Vincent leads Hurley back to a DHARMA Initiative van of which several members eventually fix and take a joy ride in — a pinnacle moment of freedom in show rife with feelings of being trapped. Vincent’s insight is also shown when he uncovers the paralyzed bodies of two other island members when the survivors hadn’t realized they were still alive.
In season 5, Vincent’s collar is one of the only on-screen indicators of the time flashes that the audience finally starts to become privy to. In season 6, he continues to live a slower life with Rose and Bernard, becoming a faithful friend to both. In the final episode of the series, after Jack finally lays dying on the jungle floor, Vincent lays next to him as a comfort, the final indicator of his tenured position as an endlessly faithful companion.
While Vincent wasn’t necessarily a ground-breaking character, he was certainly key to many aspects of the series’ plotline, most importantly giving characters motivation to venture into the jungle and discover new aspects of the island that had been largely undiscovered. In the process, he becomes a beloved member of the cast, both for the on-screen characters and for fans as well, as his adventurous nature, unquestionable loyalty, and lovable personality cemented him in the hearts of all who watched the show’s six mysterious but addicting seasons.
LOST Dog Name Considerations
The biggest considerations in finding an appropriate LOST-themed name generally start with your dog’s looks, quirks, and personality, so begin your naming journey by taking some time and physical or mental notes on what stands out about them most.
For instance, if they happen to be rotund, relaxed, and friendly, then Hugo or Hurley would be suitable, especially if they happen to like golf or golf balls. If they are somewhat aloof or mysterious but courageous or have medium length straight hair like that of a well-trimmed Llasa Apso, then Sawyer would be a great fit. If they happen to make trouble whenever you are out of the house and disappear when you return, then maybe Austen would be appropriate. If they don’t happen to take orders well or are particularly stubborn, then Locke would be suitable, thanks to his most famous quote in the show, mentioned in the intro. If they are smart, somewhat stoic, and have dark, curly hair, then Sayid or Jarrah would be perfect.
There’s no limit to the combinations you can come up with. Consider each character’s personality, looks, quirks, and tendencies, and see if you can match up more than one with something that reflects much of the same in your dog. It may take some work, or re-watching the show, but hey, it’s better than being stranded on an idea-less island.
