Mali Dog Names In Pop Culture
Not only the name of an African country, Mali is the name of a well-known special forces dog who detected explosives and insurgents while involved in an assault on a Taliban position in Afghanistan. The pup, a Belgian Malinois, was honored by receiving the Dickin medal for his efforts saving the lives of Special Boat Service troops during the operation, which happened in 2012. The PDSA charity that awards the medal calls it the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, which is the highest honor in the UK for gallantry. Mali is the 69th recipient of the medal, which has been earned by 31 other dogs, 32 World War messenger pigeons, four horses and a cat.
While deployed with the Special Boat Service, Mali was praised for providing British forces with the advantage in what was a nearly eight-hour operation to get a very well armed Taliban force out of a multistory building. While the pup was wounded by three grenade blasts, he still was able to indicate the locations of the Taliban fighter. As a result, British forces were able to have the time to react in close-quarters combat.
Mali was trained as an attack dog and sniffer dog. At one point during the operation, Mali was sent ahead to seek a safe route. His efforts ensured that the unit did not advance in an area filled with booby traps. Mali sustained injuries to his chest, front and rear legs, and his ear. He also lost a front tooth. Despite this, the pup continued, staying close to his handler; in fact, no one knew he was injured until the fighting stopped. Cpl. Daniel Hatley trained Mali as a puppy and stated, “I am extremely proud of Mali. The way he conducted himself when it mattered most enabled my colleagues to achieve success in close combat”. Though Mali’s special forces handler cannot be named for security reasons, they also received a gallantry medal for their role.
Maria Dickin, the founder of the PDSA, introduced the medal in 1943. The highest award an animal can earn in military conflict, the medal is a large, bronze medallion with the phrases “For gallantry” and “We also serve”. Mali has made a full recovery and has retired from active duty. He is now used as a training dog in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
Mali Dog Name Considerations
Many people struggle to choose a name for their new canine companion. If you are having a hard time, rest assured that you are not alone. It makes sense to try and find a name that feels just right for your pooch; after all, you will be calling your dog by that name for years to come. One way to come up with name possibilities for your pup is to take a closer look at a place that is of interest to you.
Take Mali, for example. The West Africa country includes a portion of the Sahara Desert as well as two major rivers. Why not do some exploring of the country, albeit virtually, and learn more about its cities, rivers, mountains, lakes, well-known people and foods. This will likely introduce you to a number of unique ideas for you to consider as a possible name for your pup.
Choose a few ideas that you like and try them out on your pup. Consider a food unique to the region. Saga is a fun name that refers to a leaf vegetable dish and is the perfect tag for the veggie loving pup. Thinking of a name that is short and to the point? Found on the Niger River, Gao is a city name that may fit your feisty new addition!
