Introduction
Officially known as the Republic of Malta, Malta is an island country in Southern Europe that is made up of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta is located 50 miles south of Italy, 176 miles east of Tunisia and 207 miles north of Libya and has a population of around 475,000 people. The archipelago’s islands are on the Malta Plateau, with the only inhabitants of the country being on Malta’s three largest islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino).
A unique country, Malta has a lot to offer, including a myriad of name possibilities, one of which may be just right for your canine companion.
Malta Dog Names In Pop Culture
Fort Saint Elmo is a star fort in Valletta, Malta, located on the seaward shore of the Sciberras Peninsula. Four Italian architects designed the unique structure. Our spotlight dog shares his name with this massive fort. Elmo received media attention that ultimately led to his adoption. The pup, a Pit Bull, was rescued, along with another dog, by Animal Control from owners who left them outside and did not take very good care of them. Elmo’s friend did not have to wait long to be adopted, however, Elmo was passed over time after time, likely because his mood was so somber. KC Rescue Project, the shelter where Elmo was residing, seemed to understand why Elmo was so down, realizing the pup may have felt like his life had no meaning. Fortunately, they decided to try something to help Elmo feel better AND find a forever home.
One of the shelter’s rescuers, Linda Smith, took Elmo out for their annual Furlough Day. On this day, the shelter takes out some of its dogs into the city for a great day filled with fun and adventure. Furlough Day helps the dogs meet potential adopters so that they can find a forever home.
Linda and Elmo embarked on a tour of the city, during which Elmo made many new friends and smiled throughout the day. This was the first time that anyone had seen Elmo happy. The experience moved Linda, who posted photos of their adventures on Facebook. This led to a lot of attention for Elmo; people from all over fell in love with the pup. One particular couple fell in love with Elmo and wanted to adopt him and make him happy every day. In fact, they drove five hours to meet him and bring him home!
Another dog named Elmo, an Irish Setter, gained attention when he walked into a room with multiple pianos in Finland. The dog immediately began to touch them and “sing”. According to Daily Mail, Elmo became famous as the result of a video showing him playing the piano and singing. Elmo put his paws on the piano’s keys and began to press them, while also howling as if he was singing. Apparently, Elmo decided to try out three of the pianos that were present.
Malta Dog Name Considerations
Are you ready to howl in frustration because you just can’t find the right name for your canine companion? Deciding on the perfect name for your pup can be quite the challenge. Which makes sense; after all, whatever name you choose is one that you will call many times a day for years to come. It is no wonder you want to feel good about it. So just what do you do when you have not come across the right name for your dog? Consider taking a trip - at least a virtual one!
Start by thinking of a place that has meaning to you. Choosing a name from a place that is meaningful to you means that each time you call for your pup you will be reminded of that place. Take Malta, for example. If the island country brings positive feelings to mind, go ahead and take yourself on a virtual tour. Explore Malta’s cities, towns, bodies of water, beaches, well-known residents and more. As you encounter interesting name possibilities, take note. After finishing your “trip”, you can try each name out with your pup, choosing one that is the best fit.
With a name from Malta, your best pal will have a unique name that also brings to mind a special place each time you call for them.
