Nanook

Nanook, an 8-year-old Siberian Husky, was featured on the first ever “Dog Bowl”, televised on Animal Planet. The dog, who was from the Baltimore Humane Society, played on Team Paws in the inaugural bowl, which split up 50 dogs from shelters throughout the country into two teams: Team Paws and Team Tails. The one hour special came on after the Super Bowl, following the dogs as they crossed the goal line with squeaky toys. The announcer described Nanook as a “chatty charmer with baby blues that will surely hypnotize you”. The shelter that submitted Nanook for the show submitted four other candidates as well; the show was filmed in October with the idea of showcasing animals in order to help them and other shelter animals find homes. It turns out that Nanook worked his charm well, finding his new home before the show aired. Nanook was adopted by Jeff St. Pierre, a radio show host.

A dog by the name of Juice gained quite a following on social media. The five-year old pup, residing in Derwood, Maryland, has been living at the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center where he has waited for a family. The lonely dog cried for hours in his kennel after being returned from an adoption that turned out to not be a fit. Staff documented his reaction; which included crying, packing and sitting sadly on a blanket. The staff wrote about their concerns for Juice along with the video, requesting that someone help Juice so he did not have to continue to cry in his kennel. The post was shared thousands of times and before long the shelter received an overwhelming about of calls from people inquiring about the mixed breed pooch.

Juice was surrendered 10 months prior to his video being posted; staff thought that he was one of the stronger and more emotionally stable of the dogs at the shelter, making it even more distressing that he had become so emotional. Staff at the shelter pointed out that while most shelter dogs don’t get this level of attention and may not have a compelling story, they are still in need of good homes and make excellent companions.
