Harvard Dangerfield

There is no shortage of pop culture dogs in Massachusetts. Take Champion Skilo Bear’s Ivy League C.G.C. Samoyed Sir Harvard, or “Harvard Dangerfield” for short.

Harvard has his own Instagram account and is regularly stopped on the street during walks for pictures. At 11, Harvard is more than just an internet celebrity; he is a trained therapy dog who regularly visits hospitals and nursing homes in the Boston area. When his person, Dana Sullivan, began looking for a Samoyed pup, she visited a breeder, where one particular little guy kept following her around. He wound up coming home with her. Eleven years later the pair are still keeping busy walking and serving their community.

Boston University is the home of a famous Boston Terrier named Rhett, who is the school’s official mascot. Since 1922, the Boston Terrier has been the mascot for the institution. Rhett has multiple outfits fitting for a mascot; a hockey jersey, basketball jersey and referee uniform. Rhett also has a superhero cape that he will wear for the right occasion. The pooch has competed three times in the Universal Cheerleading Association’s mascot nationals, where he placed fourth in 2002. Rhett has also been named as “Boston’s Top Mascot” in 1998.

Yale is also the home of a canine mascot; a Bulldog by the name of Handsome Dan. The first Handsome Dan began his duties in 1889 and continued until 1897. After his retirement, there were no new canine mascots until 1933, when the second Handsome Dan began his tenure. Since then, upon the retirement or death of the dog in the position, a new dog fills the role. The current Handsome Dan began filling the role in November of 2016, after the incumbent (known as Sherman at home) passed away after ten years in the role. Sherman was apparently very enthusiastic and over the years appeared in photos with President George H.W. Bush and Sir Paul McCartney. Sherman was happy to retrieve and was key in raising thousands of dollars for charity.

A fluffy three-pound dog named Norbert is another well-known Massachusetts pooch. A cross between a Chihuahua, Cairn Terrier and Lhasa Apso, Norbert’s person and her mother developed a series of books featuring him, that include photos as well as mixed-media paintings. Regardless of his small size, Norbert is able to make a big impact through his books and public appearances.
