Introduction
Officially the Republic of Mauritius, Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean. The country includes the main island of Mauritius (located about 1200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa) as well as the islands of Rodrigues, Agalega and St. Brandon. Mauritius is known for its variety of flora and fauna; many species are endemic to the island. The total land area of the country is 790 square miles.
A closer look at Mauritius will provide you with more than just the opportunity to view unique species; the country also is home to plenty of name possibilities, one of which may be perfect for your pup.
Mauritius Dog Names in Pop Culture
Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius. A place to buy local handicrafts and produce, this bustling city is known for the French Colonial architecture found there. Louis is also the name of a dog who was brought in to a rescue organization in the United States by the animal and cruelty division. The dog was matted and in very bad shape; in fact, he barely looked like a dog. The vets took excellent care of the pup and he was shaved and given a bath. After being groomed, he looked like a completely different dog. While he looked healthy, it was apparent that he had some behavioral challenges as a result of his past. For example, he would frequently curl his lip when he did not like someone and he was nervous around people.
While going through rehabilitation, a woman named Mandy decided to foster him. Her father, whose name is Joe, is experiencing dementia and can become very agitated. Mandy thought that Joe might be able to help Louis, while Louis might be able to help Joe. Fortunately, Joe fell in love with Louis immediately and it seemed that the feeling was mutual, with the two of them getting along great. Louis seems to enjoy cuddling with Joe, who seems to love the cuddles himself. Considering all of his matted fur, it is likely that Louis had not felt the touch of a human in quite some time; with Joe, Louis is getting to experience love and comfort. According to Mandy, Louis helped to lift her father’s spirit; in fact, she said that she has not seen her dad this happy in quite a long time.
While Mandy initially intended to foster Louis, she and her dad decided to adopt him as he and Joe got along so well. Louis is now a very energetic, bright, happy and well-loved pup.
Another dog named Louis was called a hero after he saved a one-year-old girl from choking to death while she slept. The little girl, named Chloe, was choking on her own vomit after she became sick in her bedroom. Louis, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, began barking and running around in order to alert Chloe’s mom that something was going on. Shannon, Chloe’s mom, rushed to see what was going on and found her daughter face down, pale and not breathing. She picked her up and patted her on the back. According to doctors, if she had not gotten to Chloe when she did, Chloe might not have lived. Apparently, Chloe used to be terrified of the pup (who belongs to Shannon’s grandmother), but now they are inseparable.
Shannon first assumed that someone was walking past their home when Louis started barking. When he did not stop, Shannon was not sure what to think since he rarely did that. She noticed that he was running in and out of the rooms and kept going back to Chloe. After they discovered Chloe, her father rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with bronchitis and a stomach bug. Thanks to Louis she made a full recovery.
Mauritius Dog Name Considerations
Naming a dog can be just as challenging as naming a new baby. It is likely you are seeking a name that fits your dog, while also having some meaning to you. And of course, you want it to be something that you don’t think you will get tired of calling for years to come. When trying to decide on a name for your canine buddy, you can turn to baby name books or websites, or you can get creative in your search and look to movies and songs as well. Some pet parents will consider a favorite travel destination.
For example, think of a place that you have visited or hope to visit one day. Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is a place that you can explore, at least virtually. During your “visit” you can check out Mauritius’ cities, villages, mountains, river, popular food and well-known people. Take names based on food, for example. Consider Mazavaroo, which is a spicy relish. This unique name can be shortened to Maza or Varoo! Vindaye is a popular fish dish and makes a pretty tag for a pup. Chances are, you will come across numerous possible monikers when looking at the culture of Mauritius, one of which may be just the right fit for your new family addition.
