The state of Michigan has its share of social media canines. A Border Collie named Piper became famous on the internet due to his job at an airport in Michigan. The 7-year-old canine works at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, where he excels at his work, chasing off wildlife. With an official title of “wildlife control K-9”, Piper began working in January of 2015 and has since become a hit on social media. The mirrored goggles he wears help him to stand out from other online dogs (and look pretty cool). Earmuffs help Piper minimize the loud sound of the planes as he runs after and chases away any creatures that are in the path of the planes arriving and departing. Snowy owls, are apparently, a favorite. Piper’s presence on social media included Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. A photo of Piper in front of a Coast Guard helicopter went viral and he has been called “the coolest dog in the world”. Sadly, Piper passed away in early 2018 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Boo, a dog from Detroit, was found by Dustin Oliver on his Facebook feed, laying on an old mattress. Dustin could see that the dog was abandoned on the side of a street in Detroit. Dustin went out to find the dog, a Pit Bull, and located him next to some items that appeared to have been discarded from a home. It seemed that the dog was waiting for his family to come home. Neighbors noted that he had been out there at least a week.

Fortunately, Dustin is the founder of the Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue and worked to build trust with the dog. When he returned the next day with breakfast sandwiches, Boo happily enjoyed his breakfast (and Dustin’s) before Dustin placed a collar on him and led him to his truck for a trip to the vet. While receiving the healthcare he needed, Boo’s story and photos of his recovery were shared across the world. The dog’s loyalty - he was waiting on a mattress for his family that had left him to come back tugged at people’s heartstrings. Fortunately, Boo was placed with a foster family during his recovery and was able to receive the attention and care that he deserved.
