Nepal Dog Names In Pop Culture
For at least fifty years, Nepal has used trained dogs in crime investigation. Back then, police officials went to a training in Malaysia and returned with four dogs to establish what was then the “Police Dog Section”. Today, that department has grown and is now known as the Central Police Dog Training School (CPDTS). The department includes 40 dogs that are utilized to hunt suspects, find arms, explosives and drugs, and participate in search and rescue operations during natural disasters. Deuti Gurung, who is the chief at CPDTS, explains that these dogs participate in up to 80% of all criminal investigations. Gurung notes that the Nepal Police train three different breeds of dogs: German Shepherds, Labradors and Golden Retrievers. German Shepherds are chosen for their strength, ability to learn, and intelligence, while Labradors and Golden Retrievers are chosen for their determination in sniffing out narcotics and tracking suspects. Nepal currently has 68 police dogs that work throughout five development regions. The majority are deployed at airports and border crossings when not involved in a criminal investigation.
Six police dogs in Nepal were honored for their work in 2016. First is Lio, a nine-year-old German Shepherd who is stationed in Kathmandu Valley. Specializing in search and identification of arms and explosives, Lio had a key role in the second Constituent Assembly election as he helped the police secure polling centers in and around the Valley, during which time US President Jimmy Carter visited the country. He was also deployed during the 18th SAARC summit.
Another German Shepherd, named Rescue, was also honored. Also serving in Kathmandu Valley, this seven-year-old works as a rescue dog as well as in detecting casualties. He is the foremost rescue dog at CPDTS and worked significantly during the 2015 earthquakes in the area’s three districts. Bhunti is a young German Shepherd who was also honored. At one and a half years of age, this young pup is a tracker dog whose specialty is in tracking and apprehending suspects. In April of 2016, Bhunti led a tracking operation where the runaway convict, who was accused of killing four members of one family, was apprehended. A German Shepherd named Jack, is a two-year-old pup who is stationed in Hetauda and Makwanpur. A tracker dog, Jack specializes in tracking and apprehending suspects. It was Jack who helped to track, identify and apprehend a man suspected of the murder of a 65-year-old man.
Other breeds were also honored; Maya, an eight-year-old Labrador Retriever is a sniffer dog who specializes in search and identification of narcotics. In 2015, Maya helped to sniff out a vehicle that had a large about of morphine and syringes. Siya, a Golden Retriever, is also a sniffer dog who specializes in search and identification of narcotics. For more than four years, Siya has had great success at eastern border checkpoints and the Biratnagar Airport.
