Introduction
Also known as Holland, the Netherlands is a country in Western Europe with a population of 17 million people. Netherlands means “lower countries”, making the name appropriate as only about half of its land is more than one meter above sea level. The Netherlands is home to the Port of Rotterdam, which is the largest port in Europe. With a lengthy history of social tolerance, the Netherlands is known as a liberal country and was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. During your search for a name for your canine companion, take a look at the Netherlands. You will likely find that the country offers a myriad of opportunities to consider.
Netherlands Dog Names in Pop Culture
A pup from the Netherlands became well-known through social media when she became very pregnant and subsequently delivered her puppies. Diva, a three-year-old American Staffordshire Cross, looked rather large not long before delivering her pups. Her human parent, Pepijn Werkman took a video and photos and uploaded them to social media. Diva apparently appeared very nervous as it became time to deliver her pups and tried to sit down. With Werkman’s help, Diva was able to stand and push as hard as she could. Her humans caught the first puppy as it was delivered, breaking the pup’s amniotic sac. From there, Diva seemed to know what to do. Diva, however, still had a lot of work to do. Her second pup, who had its mom’s brown and while coloring, soon arrived. After the third pup arrived, Diva appeared beat. But there were more puppies to come. Fortunately, Diva had her humans to assist her. Ultimately, Diva delivered 13 puppies, all of which were healthy. The average litter for a dog the size of Diva is three to four puppies, making her delivery of 13 pretty amazing. The video of Diva giving birth went viral on Youtube, with over 15 million views.
The Dutch Shepherd originated in the Netherlands; many years ago both shepherds and farmers required a dog with versatility who was able to handle the harsh existence of the times. Dogs were bred to work for the shepherd as well as keep hens from the kitchen garden, herd the cows for milking and pull carts to the market. The dogs also would alert the farmer if strangers entered the farm. After industrialization put the breed out of work, it was found that they had skills for new careers like police work, search and rescue and guide dog.
A two-year-old Dutch Shepherd by the name of Nitro gained a lot of attention in social media when a video of him doing pushups with two police officers was posted. A member of the Gulf Shores Police Department’s K-9 unit, Nitro had recently joined the unit. His video, which is set to the opening strains of “Eye of the Tiger” was viewed over 60,000 times, and includes Officer William Cowan and Officer Ben Hancock. The three are getting ready for their nightly routine. Prior to joining the K-9 unit, Nitro and Officer Scott Hubbard went through 480 hours of canine and handler training.
