During their adventures, the pair battle disease and the wrath of nature, while seeking new meaning in life. Ryan chronicles their adventure in an autobiography, “Following Atticus” that introduced Atticus worldwide. Another well-known New Hampshire dog ultimately resided in the same household. William Lloyd Garrison, a senior Miniature Schnauzer, found himself in need of a home at the age of 15 when his elderly owners could no longer care for him. He was ultimately adopted by Ryan, becoming a part of their family. The curmudgeonly old dog soon becomes comfortable in his new home and his personality shines. He then becomes the subject of his own book, “Will’s Red Coat”.
Mia is a well-known New Hampshire dog who is covered in natural dreadlocks. Residing in Newmarket, Mia is a Bergamasco, a rare Italian sheep dog breed that has existed for thousands of years, however is rarely seen in the United States. Her owner, Wendy Wakefield Ferrin states that Mia is one of only about 50 dogs of the breed in the country. The 10-year old pooch weighs 52 pounds, although her dreadlocks add another 32 pounds of weight. Ferrin adopted Mia from a kill shelter in North Carolina in 2008 and ever since has been peppered with questions when people meet Mia. Questions are often asked about her breed and how she can see. For her part, Mia appears to enjoy the attention she gets when out.
The Chinook is a breed of dog that is well-known in New Hampshire, having been designated as the official state dog in 2009. Dogs of the breed are sled and work dogs that were developed in the state during the early 20th century by Arthur Walden in Wonalancet, New Hampshire.
