Introduction
Pointer Dog Names in Pop Culture
One of the most prominent English Pointers in television and cinema is also one that people don’t commonly think of when discussing the breed. Pluto, the dog of everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic mouse, Mickey - Walt Disney’s first (and arguably most classic) animated creation - is one of the first representations of the English Pointer in the history of animation. While Pluto is officially listed as a mixed breed, he is modeled after the classic look of the Pointer, which can be seen in his long snout, droopy ears, and long, thin tail. This is further proved in the 1939 animated short titled, “The Pointer,” in which Mickey Mouse is reading a book about how to train a Pointer.
Pluto retains many traits of the English Pointer, including his tenacity, curiosity, and ability to be quite mischievous. He is endlessly inquisitive, often sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong with truly hilarious consequences. In many ways, it is these features that make him the lovable and comedic pet-sidekick that we know today. Pluto is easy to recognize and is largely considered to be one of the pioneering figures in character animation due to his ability to portray thoughts, emotions, and questions from his body language alone. His ability to be expressive, much like the English Pointer breed as a whole, enraptures audiences with its empathetic, human-like level of awareness.
Since his first appearance in 1930, Pluto has been a staple of the Disney franchise and of family homes around the world. He has taught, entertained, and befriended children and their families for generations. While he may not play an active speaking role in the Mickey Mouse crew, he is certainly an important, memorable member, and much of this has to do with his ability to capture the viewer’s attention without saying a word. While he may have traits similar to humans - most of these involving his ability to emote using facial features, such as raising his eyebrows - he is largely treated as a dog, and this is what makes him a unique, dynamic character.
Pointer Dog Name Considerations
When considering the type of name you ought to give your dog, it is best to focus on personality and appearance. Is your dog curious and bold, or mellow and observant? What color is his coat? A dog with a red-brown coat might make the perfect Copper, while a dog with a laid-back, loyal personality would be an excellent Atlas. It is often important to consider personality and appearance simultaneously. After all, a dog that’s mellow and regal in personality might make a great Opal, but the name makes less sense when her dark brown appearance is considered.
When coming up with a list of names, you might also consider your dog’s favorite activities. Dogs that love the outdoors or chasing after small animals would be great candidates for names like Fetch, Fox, Reed, and Arrow. Dogs that prefer the indoors, cuddling in their favorite bed, or snuggling you on the couch, might make for a good Sheba, Penny, or Heidi. Focus on your dog and let the name come to you naturally. Remember, no one knows your Pointer quite like you do!
