Red Dead Redemption Dog Names in Pop Culture
Rufus is the Marston family dog. This yellow Labrador Retriever belonged to John Marston (main protagonist), Abigail Marston, and Jack Marston, their son. He accompanied John and Jack on several hunting missions near the end of the story, so most people remember him from that, but otherwise, Rufus was a small character.
Unsurprisingly, not much is known about him. We know who he belonged to, and what he enjoyed doing (being with the family), as well as the fact that he was a good tracking dog, but not much else. Also, as a matter of heart wrenching detail, when John and Abigail both pass away, Rufus can still be seen roaming around Beecher's Hope (located in the Great Plains, region of the West Elizabeth territory), never leaving home even after they were gone.
Rufus also made an appearance in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. During the mission "Love in the Time of Plague," he was chased behind a house, but not just any old house. Undead Jack Marston's house! His fate is unknown, unfortunately. All that is known is that Jack ties up his mother, Abigail, and then runs toward John, his father.
Another one of the domestic pets seen in the game was Charlie, a Border Collie with tricolored fur. He would herd cattle and sheep in MacFarlane's Ranch at night, logically because of his breed. A bit of a trick with Charlie was that if the players whistled at him, he would follow suit, leaving the ranch. He would be useful too, attacking animals in the wild, and pointing them out. Furthermore, you didn't need to worry about any outlaws being mean and trying to kill him. Charlie had a huge health bar and made it almost impossible to kill him. Another thing we know about Charlie is that he liked to play fetch. He could be seen in the MacFarlane Ranch fetching a stick with a man or woman.
These two, Rufus and Charlie, are the only two domestic dogs that are named in the game. Every other dog featured is roaming around select areas of the game. Usually each area is home to a specific type of dog, with the Wolfhounds residing in Tall Trees, and Siberian Huskies in Nosalida. There are also Bernese Mountain Dogs in MacFarlane's Ranch and Armadillo, although less frequently. The Labradors tended to be in Armadillo, Blackwater, Beecher's Hope and Manzanita Post.
Red Dead Redemption Dog Name Considerations
When selecting a name for your new best friend, there are a few things to consider. Doing so makes the naming process smoother, something that is highly appreciated by those of you who have been struggling to come up with good name options for your pet.
First and foremost, remember that this game features many Wild Western names, many of which are Hispanic in nature. They would work well with breeds that are known to originate from Latin countries, such as the Chihuahua. That being said, don't brush off a name because it isn't a good fit based on this alone. There are many factors at play.
For instance, if you've already adopted the dog, and you've noticed a bit of a rebellious personality, it may be a wise idea to select a name that further highlights that character trait, regardless of origin or breed. In other words, just make sure the name makes sense in some way. Forcing a name to fit won't do your pet justice.
Also, keep in mind that many of these characters did some terrible deeds, or suffered some bad endings. Not every pet owner is tolerant of these connotations being attached to their pet's names, so please read name descriptions!
